Hello ship,...We are here to add what we can to life, not to get what we can from it.

Interesting, coming from a General. And food for thought.
pretzelman: I think he was trying to tell us how important it is to think before we fire weapons. He was telling us that war should only be a very last option????
Hi Pretzie, He has so many quotes that in some way contradict that one. Also another one like that with more attached to it about young children I think.

I think of it much as I do this quote of him:
" Until the latest of our world conflicts, the United States had no armaments industry. American makers of plowshares could, with time and as required, make swords as well. But now we can no longer risk emergency improvisation of national defense; we have been compelled to create a permanent armaments industry of vast proportions. Added to this, three and a half million men and women are directly engaged in the defense establishment. We annually spend on military security more than the net income of all United States corporations.
"This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence -- economic, political, even spiritual -- is felt in every city, every State house, every office of the Federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so is the very structure of our society."

That I totally agree with, Starlin. I've grown up shooting since I was a little girl, and raised that you only fire in defense. I've studied Martial Arts for years as well, and again, I was taught it's a last resort. If you can, you get out of the situation. I agree that this goes for war as well. If possible, work it out peacefully. War should always be a last resort.

The problem is that people have VERY different ideas about what constitutes "last resort." I remember being told as a child countless times, for example, that Vietnam was a necessary war to prevent a domino-effect collapse of the region into Communism...and lately, the Iraq invasion was called a "tragic necessity." (??!!)
I would call "last resort" the threat of an invasion; a "reasonable resort" would be the invasion of an ally.

I'll agree with you on that Ambrose, my friend. And I agree that we tend to poke our noses in where they don't belong with the result of losing a lot of good, young Americans for no good reason. I stand behind our soldiers for doing their job, but I don't always stand behind those who make the decisions to send our soldiers to war in foreign lands.

I agree with this....but I have heard it said that it is not a very possible stance. Either you are for the soldiers or against
REPEAT......I agree with you, Dru!
I don't want to misconstrued as being disagreeable

I whole-heartedly agree, PM. But why ohhh why does it take someone of notariety to get the message across? Its basic common sense and a understanding of compassion toward our fellow man, surely? So....??!! I don't understand the difficulty.....
We all have within our power, and, yes, even the "little guy", to either inject a bit of happiness into someone's life or make someone miserable.....
Why would anyone CHOOSE the latter? And it is, indeed.... a CHOICE!!
Thanks for posting that, PM.... food for thought indeed!!
