I was chatting to a friend about global warming and the fact we are having a tough winter all over Europe, so wondered:

Is it a total fact that global warming exists or is it a ploy by governments to try and save our depleting resources?
We seem to have a cycle of climate conditions for example the Romans grew grapes in England, but not so long ago the winters were co cold the rivers froze over, I have seen pictures of people skating on the river Thames in London.

Man made Global warming is real (except for some vested interests who will pay anyone to deny it) There are long-term climate cycles too but we have accelerated and affected these. What the outcome will be is not clear...that's the scary thing.

Well, there`s so much hype about it .. the lies and counter-lies.

But the fact is - some countries are so damaging the natural resources that the earth doesn`t stand a chance in hell of surviving as it is.

When vast areas are turning rapidly into deserts. No more trees to purify the air, or soak up the rain for transpiration.

When China is poisoning the Yellow river that used to run freely and empty into the sea - it now barely makes it to the sea - and what does make it is SO polluted its dangerous! Factories are spewing their chemicals into that once huge river that tributaries are running in violent shades of the rainbow and not a living thing is surviving in it.

I`m guessing that so many people are living on artificial liquids these days that to "purify" some water and add more chemicals to satisfy thirst has made people believe they dont realy need real water anymore? .... Or real food?

Oh well, maybe "The End is Nigh" signs will begin to appear again? The Circle Just Keeps on Turning?

Whatever the pro and contras are - we are destroying the Planet Earth we are living on - even if the atmosphere is warming up again from a natural cause - we speed it up - incredible Hurricans - more torrential rain in some parts with land lost for islands populations - more draught in others with massive starving for those affected - Huge costs will effect the world economy - and mirgarants will risk their life to find a possible place to survive. Who will stop them - and how ?
I know it sounds bad - but we are to take resposibility to the next generations -
If economy is only measured in groth by the earnings today of hourly stock markets regardless to enviroment or peoples lives - it has been proven as a bad chance already for us today - imagine what we will create for the future generations doh dunno

Would it help this thread at all if I say it is both fact AND fiction?

No, did not think so.

Still, littering the place we live in is not very wise and resorting to renewable energy instead of drilling holes in the ground can not be a bad idea no matter how we twist it.

The message is - shape up - get clean. If we calm down the rate of climate change by chance in the process it wouldn't hurt.

If not, well, it wouldn't hurt anyway.

I know this is the wrong thread,
but I neeeeeeeeeeeed to vent....

Obama was on the news just then,
holding a speech on stimulating the economy.

"What do you think a stimulus is?" Obama asked incredulously. "It’s spending — that's the whole point! Seriously.”

Hang on...what do you agree with here??....does this mean that he suggests that the best way is to spend their way out of this recession??...

Long term yes....short term there is an imbalance but that is why they are trying to stimulate spending....that said, priority should be given to long-term viable sustainable stuff in the stimulus professor

Lagoona22: we need to return to a better balance between supply and demand, that is not synthetically stimulated by politicians and their bankers...

We do indeed.

I do not really know why we are over-heating the market like we do, I think 2 billion new consumers waiting around the corner does its bit to discount for a larger market than there really is.

By decreasing supply we will increase relative demand, and that won't do it, but it would limit depreciation. The only way that works in the system we have now is to increase demand on available supply, risking inflation in the bargain.

Guess that will only work so far, too.

Doing that and we get India and China on the market within say 10 years, would cover the move for a substantial period of time. If they do not enter the lines to the mall... Houston, we have a problem.

Hi riz,

Does global warming' exist yes and no...Its more true to call it climate change...Have 'we' affected it..probably but not to the extent that Goverments make people believe..All they are using is scare tatics to screw people for more money to help pay for the mess they got 'us' into..

What do all our politicians do... drive petrol guzzling cars and fly off to the four corners of the world in big jets..increasing their carbon foot print but charging 'joe blogs' for it in higher taxes...

I beleive that the 'Harrps' system in Alaska has more to do with things than goverments let on..And can affect weather conditions quicker than buring fossil fuel..

There is enough technology around today to make all cars for example run on water(water is in abundace on this wee place)..But there is more money made in oil..black gold.

Does the earth go through its own natural cycles yep and there isn't much we can do about it..We just happen to be around when mother nature is flexing here muscles..Take volcanos for example when they expolde they do more damage to the upper atmosphere than burning a few lumps of coal..

(I'll come back to this..but I need to make a phone call)

Show Us the Green, Before We Show You the Money
Bailing U.S. Out the Fossil Fuels Economy
By KARYN STRICKLER

It's my turn. I want a bailout. Not hundreds of billions of dollars to the auto industry for making an inefficient, dirty product that Americans have stopped buying. Not trillions of dollars to the banks that have made bad loans, creating an explosive housing bubble, leading to the worst economic collapse since the Great Depression.

I want to be bailed out of the fossil fuel economy. America must kick the fossil fuel habit for our environment, our economy, our national security, our health, our children -- and forever.

Even with lower gasoline prices, America's dependence on fossil fuel is still gouging us at the gas pump. The cost of heating and cooling our homes is skyrocketing. The fossil fuel economy is stoking the war in Iraq, fouling our air and water, jeopardizing our national security and exacerbating catastrophic climate change.

If America could put a man on the moon, we can make the transition to 100% clean, renewable, non-nuclear energy within 10 years. It will require unflinching leadership an order of magnitude beyond anything that today's political leaders have proposed.

There is scientific consens that we are in the middle of a worldwide emergency with catastrophic climate change -
It threatens our way of life and our children's future as well as our pockets tomorrow more then today - and thats why it want stop !!!

"Scientists agree that global warming is caused by human activity and attributable to historically unprecedented levels of greenhouse gases in the air from burning fossil fuels. Some noted experts have even called coal and oil unintended weapons of mass destruction. The effects of such climate change could be devastating for life on this planet: inundating island nations and coastal areas; causing severe droughts and storms and spreading infectious disease. It is stressing our oceans, forests (are dissapearing in I dont know of how many square kilometers a year = false statistics ), wetlands and permafrost, all carbon sinks which help to absorb excess greenhouse gases when the Earth is healthy."

HEY - These are not tomorrow's problems - they affect every Human already today. Even the people in Island and Alaska (so happy to get easy to their Oil and Gas and enjoy milder climats,,
Alaska fighting for Oil or for the Polarbears ?

Well, think about it! What makes us think we are so unique that our "civilization" is any better than those before us?

Those others, who are classed as Primitive, but who built huge stone temples and cities - whose ruins are turning back to dust - did they also not go thru some climate changes?

There are world maps dating from BC eras, glyphs we dont understand - or pretend to "understand" - mysteries not yet unraveled, of pre-historic cultures, yet we continue to believe we are the epitomy of all understandings and science?

I wonder ... how many times has the earth been "destroyed"? and begun all over to re-populate itself? There is usually always some small remnant left behind .... that remembers some things ......dunno... and bones and fossils of creatures unknown ..... grin

I think there are more things to be included here besides people polluting rivers etc. It is much more ocmplex than most people imagine. Reversal of deserts and floodplain areas is something that has wider implications and may be caused by other tings too.

For instance magnetic shifts in the earth's polarity.

It's not all about people and what they do. Their ideas about how much influence they have on the planet are sadly exaggerated in my opinion.

It’s marked as we begin to map and understand the limits of the known universe; we fail to appreciate the limits of the very planet we depend on for the continued survival of all dependent species.

We discount the planets ability at radical simpatico adaptation; whilst second guessing a far more superior system which has survived for eons in hostile space environments. The part we play may be minuscule in comparison, and misguided in the extreme.
