This thread explores people who portray a high status image whilst not having the means to support it.

The big house and flashy car that they cannot afford, and living conditions of cold discomfort and an empty fridge phenomena.

Feel free to discuss.

How is it any of your business how others choose to live? You don't know the reasons behind it.

Live and let live

It becomes my business when they whinge to me about having no money for essentials, and look down their noses at people living on welfare etc.

Also, I happen to think they are idiots.

Why are you so touchy about it?

very interesting topic actually and thank you for starting this thread. my take:

this all stems from a set of very complicated psychological behavioral issues and systems. we re being lead to believe, ultimately from our financial elite, that if we consume this will produce happiness. yes consumption can produce happiness but its short lived, hence why we feel the need to go shopping again to try produce that happiness again. marketing and advertising is used to keep us consuming and it even goes many steps further by playing psychological games on us, i.e. making us think and feel that we must consume in order to be happy, be a part of society, so people will like us and accept us etc etc. true happiness is truly created from many things such as a good healthy lifestyle, healthy positive relationships etc etc. the people that are playing the game of appearances are only playing a game with themselves. they are portraying that they are doing well in life. its upmanship. we have created a social system whereby in order to be seeing to be getting one over or progressing up the social ladder, some feel the need to play these games to do so. our social system has become extra competitive. our economical and financial systems promote and encourage this kind of behaviour. basically, it sells a lot of products so that the rich can become richer. all a scam im afraid and it gets a lot of families and individuals into a lot of trouble.

fuel for thought:

in this podcast, jamie brown explains how biological systems show signs of immaturity when they are in direct competition but when they start cooperating they have matured and the system as a whole benefits. she goes on the explain, our economic systems are showing similar signs, i.e. we re showing signs of immaturity in the development of our species by having economic systems that are in direct competition. we need to start cooperating asap so that our system as a whole will benefit or theres a possibility the system as a whole will eventually collapse. interesting theory in which i think shes right. enjoy

Well said Sir.

And I concur in laymans terms, idiots being fooled by big business and a prejudiced society to play the game of acquiring material possessions as symbols of staus. Oh we all need a bigger house, shinier car or the latest gadget or people will think they are better than us. laugh

hmmm i wouldnt call them idiots as we re all getting fooled by this system, including myself but at least i have some sort of awareness of the scam. it actually goes way beyond big business to the high levels of our financial systems. its a very disturbing system when you look into it and it has the potential to destroy our existence and our planet if we allow it

I once mentioned a friend that has 5 children
And was living in a B and B to which the author
Of this boring thread responded saying he shouldn't
Have 5 children while on social welfare...

The same friend had a job but stanly jumped to
The narrow minded conclusion the only welfare
Recipients had big families

He then went on to make a load of disgraceful
Comments about the same friends pit bulls and
Horses amongst other things

Snobbish in the extreme it was

Very mixed up chap
