hmmm, well I guess we do pay taxes twice if we look at what taxes are being used for roads. We pay 46 cents for every dollar at the gas pump for taxes, then when we license our car the same added tax which is another 40 percent goes to fixing the roads as well. So in some odd cases we do pay taxes twice for some things.

Because countries have different criteria on the withdrawing. Some tax according to the nationality, others to income.
The USA for instance, taxes their nationals, no matter where they are. If they are abroad, they might have to pay to the host country as well if this one has the "income" criteria.
To avoid this problem, many countries have agreements- double taxation agreements- so taxes can be paid only once.

It's easy for those who have the nationality criteria to cheat by establishing a company in a country where they can easy lie about their real income so to pay less taxes. It's a perfect way of getting rich.

Here in Sweden the income tax is 67%, then every goods and service is taxed – the rate varies from 6 % to 20 %, depends of the product; fuel taxed higher, don’t know the rate. So we do pay double tax.

Why we do that? The simple answer is: given democracy, we pay double tax because the holy majority wants that.

At Perestroyka times in USRR, during a very short period when you could trust the official media, I’ve read in a paper that the income tax rate during the last Soviet period was 83 %; though consumer products weren’t taxed. Looks like a democracy taxes their good citizens at the same rate as an autocracy taxes their ugly herd.

I think, any political system needs means to establish, then to maintain its existence. And as money gives an individual some degrees of freedom, and it’s not that easy to govern an independent body, so a political system takes that freedom from him, which guarantees the existence of the system in question, and, to some extend, stability and order even for the “independent” body as well.

Because we were too ignorant and complacent to stop the civil servants from implementing it.

Actually Phoenix, we pay tax more than two times.

If you are a salaried person you usually pay
1. income taxes
2. sales taxes on everything you buy
3. with-holding taxes on your interest income.
4. wealth taxes on your total worth indexed to some standard.
5. Road tax to use your car.
6. Value added taxes (subtly different from sales tax) on top of every service you buy ie.medical
7. Taxes imposed from time to time for special purposes deemed important by the country.
8. Death taxes though that wont bother you.
9. And a multiplicity of other taxes, like stamp taxes, excise etc. etc. etc.

So, how about becoming a revolutionary

Oh the Irish Government can go one better. We have VRT or vehicle registration tax which is 25% of the vehicles value and here's the real stinger...they charge VAT on that VRT. The tax is taxed as having value too. Yet at every oppertunity, they tell us we have a low tax ecconomy...compared to who?confused

That usually costs more than paying double taxes, for everyone directly involved, and for a lot of people that are not directly involved in a revolution. Transaction costs, so to say. And whoever would win – thy will impose the same taxes.

By the way, this forum is a peaceful bunch – it never goes beyond complaining.

Compared to Vehicle Registration Tax which we can make 45 %!
Signed: Irish Government and Low Tax Economy.

PS Buy a horse instead. Or get married… in the second case the VRT will be your least grief.

No, it was only an advice.

As to a dinner… no chance: the tax rate on food is 12.5 %. Though you can always dine on the lawn. But hurry up, in a couple of months grass won’t be that green as it is now.
