What things have you recently dispensed with, or could easily give away, because they no longer reflect either you or your interests?

What things are part and parcel of the current you? :chatting emoticon:

In the last few years I have lived in Toronto, Australia, Ghana and now The Netherlands. The only things that have moved with me are some basic jewelry (mostly wooden and metal bits), my keyboard and my books on history. Everything else in my life appears to be replacable. (OH my...what a sad reflection!)

Sorry - forgot to answer Your questionwow

What it says about me? - I guess it tells people that I am not materialistic - my values are more focused on things/issues that doesn`t cost anything - but to me they are far more important.

Oh - and I will of course also bring my beloved PC!!laugh

Hi Imma. Ja, moving countries realy cuts one down to basics, huh?

Whenever I see people moving long distance I give a thought to the San peoples of Africa - Nomads - who only carried their digging sticks (for finding food), and a couple animal hides for shelter! And modern people move with boxes and crates of possessions only transportable by trucks!grin

But, what you say, shows an independence - in my opinion - to not have yourself weighted down .......?

To answer my own questions - I despense with things quite easily, now, simply because I no longer place value on inanimate objects. For so long I lived weighted down with "valuable" inherited things - until I decided to re-locate with only my 20kg of travel luggage .... Wow, what a lovely feeling! Just giving away stuff! And now - if someone wants something, they can have it. What I need seems to always find me anyway!

Part and parcel of the current me? My pc, my box of paints and brushes, my manuscripts, and a small collection of inspirational books, and my staple gun (can do SO much with that!) The rest is replaceable.cheers

grin Ah, Elley, you will see, in time, that she did you a favour. The manuscript? Ja that was valuable ... but your brain can come up with another ......even better one! (maybe that was a "roadsign"? - it was not meant to be?)

The chip will get lighter too, as time passes.cheers and one day it will just fall off, all on its own ....maybe when you give a shrug?grin

Old clothes. I dont hold on to much unless I have use for it. My history books, tennis equipment and computer. I do have an antique pump organ from 1898. still works ,but if someone wanted it I would give it away as it does take up a lot of room and I have noso use for it. that old song I keep on going back to, I got plenty of nuttin and nuttin is plenty for me.

Well when I left my home and my husband, I really left everything behind except my books and the clothes I really needed-and I felt wonderfull and still do. I really am a bit crazy about my books, even not having any shelf at the beginnig they were my "treasure" and even if not all of them are really worth reading-they are my best friends ,I want them with me.
During my marriage of 35 years lots of things had filled the cupboards, christals, special plates and all that kind of stuff. Dear dear, how useless is all that! I call my friends and my children for luch or dinner and we eat from simple plates and they don't need to be good porcelan or christal glasses, just cheap plates and cheap glasses-and I assure you we enjoy every meal extremly-its the comapany that counts and not anything else. And this company-children and friends they sure are the most prescious goods I have.

I have travelled quite a bit over the years, and one thing I have learned from that, is that I can easily walk away from 'things'. There are some books I would want to eventually have with me, a few possessions, but most things can be bought all over the world if and when I wanted that item again.

But in answer to the thread topic, you would be able to deduce that I do not splurge unnecessarily, yet what I do have is tasteful, some even rare items, including an original work of art by a prominent Chinese artist. I have minimal pieces of jewellery as most things I eventually lose. But I do prefer white gold and silver rather than yellow gold, and natural gemstones as well as good quality crystal jewellery such as swarovski. Handbags and footware will always be leather, unless made of fabric. Never 'eco leather'(what a horrible term for fake leather!).

A few years ago, I put my current family home on the market(no, I did not want to sell it in the end), so it was a great time to store things and go all minimalist. Well, at the end of the exercise, I had got to love living without clutter that I never did bring back those items. In fact, I had a garage sale at my brother's place, and what did not sell to the public, I sold to my brother! (I do wish I hadn't sold my antique oak desk though!)

There are things that are not at all bad or useless that I can easily give away: some of the textbooks from university times, economic history... brrrrrr... or my rowing machine (don’t know if it’s right name in English) as, as things are now, I’m not sure whether I’ll be able to use it again.

And there are some things that are not useful in any way, but that I don’t want to separate with, as my samovars. Though I’d drop them without second thought if I’d have to choose, of one or another reason, what things to keep.

Irreplaceablities, as photos and books in Russian, I’ll drag with me until death will part us. grin

As to the main question... I certainly cannot know what my things say about me to other people.

Hi Ghost.

Maybe I was sad because in moving about a lot (I can't help it, I love to travel), you end up making friends who DO eventually become replaced also. You make friends with people in the International community. You bond quickly and make each other 'family substitutes' and then.............you move........it's strange. moping

But for today, with what I have and the friends around me, I shall smile.

Ahhh yes, the fancy crockery and cutlery and then we eat off the "kitchen" plates! Which just proves that its the human company that counts - not the inanimate objects!

I was highly amused, once, visiting some "posh" relatives in their villa in Italy. We sat down to the meal ...... my friend and I were handed the ordinary kitchen glasses (same as the kids were using for their sirop) and wine was poured into this. The Lady of the Villa went to the antique sideboard and took out two beautiful crystal wine glasses for herself and her husband.......grin

With all their doctorate degrees, contrived living style ... basically, in my opinion, they fell down to the level below the peasants who tilled their fields.....drinking
