Spain is a vast and beautiful country. Barcelona, Madrid and Toledo are fabulous for the history. Same as everywhere, there is good and bad. Holidaying and living here are miles apart..the bureaucracy, slowness and siestas can drive you crazy. Im lucky, albeit I live on the coast, its not full of pissed up British lager louts, however, its not cheap anymore, apart from cigarettes and tobacco, food is more expensive than in the UK. The Spanish government, much the same as everywhere else I guess keep making idiotic decisions that affect existing businesses..
People see it as the good life, always sunshine, they dont see the damage a gota fria can cause nor realise that during winter, even 10 miles inland from coastal areas we get snow, yet the houses have no gas nor insulation and in summer temps get above 40 degrees Celsius...thats 110 plus Fahrenheit..electricity is so expensive, even if you have air con you don't use it. Would I go back to the UK...no not at all, but its not all sunshine and bougainvillaeas, and there is definitely prejudice against foreigners...but we accept that, it is, after all not our country. You learn basic Spanish so they switch to Valenciano in the region I live.
However its still a beautiful place to live, one of the strangest comments I ever read was in a local paper from someone returning to the UK..because she was bored, bored with looking out at the view from the front and seeing mountains and bored with the back and seeing only the sea...guess she wanted to see the number 49 bus trundling past her window every 10 minutes..
I love Spain. It's one of my favorite countries in Europe. I've been to Madrid and Bilbao and Basque area for business a couple of times, and Barcelona, Lloret de Mar, y Salou for holidays.
Northern Spain along the coast is unimaginably beautiful. Costa Dorado is fun for holiday-goers. I ever made it to Cadiz and the southern part sadly.
Everyone I met in Spain were welcoming and friendly and I was introduced to Sangria, flamenco, and a Barcelona policeman there.

Oooh what did I do there, that previous post was solcistemoon´s not mine. However, in response to her post, I would say that after living here for 12 years I have never experienced any prejudice whatsoever. Perhaps because I don´t live in an area where there are many ex-pats, indeed very few, and they all seem to be teachers like me.
I cannot complain about anything, other than the bureaucracy, but I am extremely sad to see how many young and highly qualified students of mine are unemployed due to this damn crisis. Ironically the crisis has resulted in too much work for me as people are desperate to learn English or improve their current English skills in order to be in a better position to find work.
Last week two of my students actually found jobs after lengthy unemployment periods so we celebrated as if we had won the lottery!
Like Solcistemoon, I would never go back to the UK in spite of the hard times here in Spain.
i like spain very much! spent some time in madrid, barcelona, valencia, followed the coast down to gibraltar and then over to morocco. ended up staying in sitges for 6 months. i had a wonderful time there..and every time i got ready to return to canada..i just couldn't..and before i knew it....6 months had gone by.
