MrRick77: Can being Obese be in the family genes ? Or is it strictly about eating too much.
Can I ask you how many Fat people you see in Africa or in concentration camps on TV? None! So it's not a family gene thing. That is an excuse. It is from eating more calories than you burn.
If so, you should consider going back to kindergarten and learning how to treat, and speak, to others as you yourself wish to be treated and spoken to. One woud've hoped that labeling people that are different ourselves went out of style years ago. Sadly, this proves there are those who still are knuckle dragging buffoons. Oh darn. Lookie there. I just did the same thing. Shame on me!

It's in the genes.
When you look at film and pictures from the past the people are all as fat as they are now, it's just a trick of the camera that makes them all look shapely.
No, there's no such thing as inescapable obesity all there is are some people that can eat a little more because they naturally burn off more calories when doing nothing(such as people with AIDS) - and not even by all that much. You're fat/thin because you don't intake the right amount of calories and nutrients and you don't exercise properly.
I was one of these so-called "hardgainers" as I believed I could eat anything without getting fat. Well, when I actually sat down and planned a sensible diet and stuck to it it turned out I was never eating enough before(always be wary of how the self chooses to remember its own behaviour(particularly women)and the weight came piling on with weight-lifting.

So if genes are not one of the factors of obesity, what could be other factors?
Depression? Anxiety? Chemical imbalance? Hypothyroidism? The list goes on. There is the other side of the coin. Anorexia, bulimia, etc. There are alot of people out there self-medicating.
Stop the hateful name calling and finger pointing and focus on one's own areas that need attention.

You claimed I was laughing at people in concentration camps which I find offensive. And the reason you claimed that is because you did not like my argument. And argument which hold water and you don't seem to be able to put holes in.
I am sure depression causes people over eating, I doubt a chemical in-balance does. But it all come back to OVER EATING. Taking in more calories than you burn. Now if you want to go into the reasons people over eat then that is fair enough but genes are not to blame for people being fat. Eating more calories than you burn is the reason!
Kaybee50: Do you find people in Africa having no food funny? I do something about it and I hope you and others do as well.
Stop will ya. Another bleeding heart. I thought you were directing you first comment at me that why I said that. And what can you do from the US about Africa? We all give what we can but real change only come through governments.
Ccincy: Well so far this threads going well. How many threads about weight have there been so far?
Iv not seen any or started any?
I sympathies with overweight people. I know there are psychological reasons people over eat. But I don't accept genes are to blame. That is such a cop out. And the obesity problem will only get worse if we start thinking like that.
If overweight people eat a balanced diet and exercise they will lose weight no matter what genes they have.

We spend alot of time, effort, and resources helping. Why am I even needing to explain this? Just as your countrymen do as well. It has nothing to do with Bleeding Hearts, but with sincere concern and empathy.

A bleeding heart is someone who comes on here and tells everyone they do it and makes comments like " I hope you do it too".
We know about charity in Ireland and give our fair share.

Oh you're not fooling anyone Kaybee. We all know you are shameless.

I saw at least one or two the other day about weight and I know they weren't started by you.
My Aunt and my mother were both overweight but theirs was caused by a medical problem and once it was treated they began to lose weight.I don't believe everything is caused by genes either but that's only my opinion.I know someone will disagree with me.
Theres a TV show called Biggest Loser that deals with fat ppl losing weight .

I think an under active thyroid can make it hard to lose weight and that can cause some people to be overweight. But that is not genes. That is medical. The problem is lots of overweight people are now blaming their genes or thyroid without even thinking. It's such a cop out.
My sister was overweight and asked for my help. I called in 5 nights a week and we went running and to the gym. She also started eating better. She lost 5 stone(70 pounds) in about 2 years and she is still a normal weight now.

I was told long ago that it's not so much the food you eat but all the stuff you put on it.Some of or all of the fat free food isn't all what it's claimed to be either ther's still fat in it.All those diet commerical claims on tv is a bunch of crap and just a money maker.
For those with an interest in this subject might I recommend the latest book by Lionel Shriver (author of 'we need to talk about Kevin') which deals with this issue.
It's at least partly based on her real life brother who was morbidly obese. It's a good read.
Ccincy: I've yet to hear anyone who just happened to have a problem with their weight blame anyone or objects.
You have a great imagination.
It's the same kind of thinking, this is the point.
Universally anything bad that happens to the individual is the fault of some force beyond their control(genes/jews/patriarchy). This mentality comes naturally to an infantilised Western world as Westerners, like v.young children, have a strong aversion to holding themselves accountable to the consequences of their actions.
