Some people are fooled into thinking that PRISM will protect the U.S. from terrorist attacks. Well, where were they during the Boston Marathon bombing?

PRISM?....That's very much the definition of terrorism... We the people did not give any government the right to do whatever they want !

bogart, but this is U.S.:
“For years, members of Congress ignored evidence that domestic intelligence-gathering had grown beyond their control, and, even now, few seem disturbed to learn that every detail about the public’s calling and texting habits now reside in a N.S.A. database.” new-york times

Several U.S. agencies are doing the same thing in European countries, and surely around the world.
And not only the americans, also other secret services.

and?... any member of Congress (any "congress" in the world) are elected and supposed to represent the people. no one gave them the right to super star status. now we have these pseudo members representing their interest or some "political" or economical agenda.
Prism, for me is an act of terrorism, as it does not achieve anything. and the spy that is going on - including in Europe - is an act of terrorism.
So, is not only in US... but also in our back yard...

Oppressive regimes always tell the people they are being oppressed for their own good. It has happened for generations in many different countries. Only the really stupid people buy into that though.
Far from the land of the free over there is it? You can't sneeze without your government knowing it.

That's why they call themselves the Land of the Free. They can make surveillance laws for the free, under different rules than for the rest.

and heaven forbid if your able to catch on.I am not a skeptic for nothing. I do wish they would use surveillance to catch the sick humans who hurt young people.

They will use the surveillance for everything they want, but perhaps these sick humans aren't between their priorities.

They will only use surveillance to help the people in power and the large corporations keeping them there. They don't give two hoots about young people, old people or any people. But I surprised with the history of the US and how most value their civil liberties that the people seem quite subdued about their government spying on them. It seems they have fallen for the usual excuses used by oppressive regimes down the years.
CuddlingSoul: Washington is just upset, because the citizens have the technology to spy on the White House and Government. I guess they are sort-of in panic mode.
There's more to come. The Germans are pissed off and their research will be methodical. Very difficult to justify tapping Mrs Merkel's phone for 10 years on the basis of 'security threat'.
I can see Ed Snowden ending up with a Nobel Prize or similar (and despite all the political noise - no one's actually come up with a state secret he's revealed - what he's shown is the extent of malpractice). He'll be living in Berlin on a diplomatic passport soon
I think American Intelligence (an oxymoron if ever there was one) has shot itself in the foot, if not in the head. Hearing the US president having to apologize to world leaders for something, I suspect, he knew little or nothing about is not going to improve the president's opinion of the NSA. I think it very rich for the US to complain about China's use of its intelligence service to perform commercial espionage whilst doing the same thing itself. Personally I suspect our, the British Intelligence service, are doing the same or very similar which may be why the response of our Prime Minister, rather than being outraged at the invasion of privacy of UK citizens has simply threatened to prosecute the press if they publish any more secrets released by Snowden. My opinion is that the Intelligence services of the US and the UK have lost the plot. They are so concerned about the internal threat of terrorism, a problem they have dealt with by swapping data on each others citizens to avoid breaking national laws and allowing them to say 'We do not spy on our own people', Yeah! not much! I suspect they have lost the reason for their existance and now are simply spying for the sake of spying.
FISA is an extraterritorial law which allow to spy everyone who's not U.S. citizen. Extraterritorial jurisdiction is the legal ability of a government to exercise authority beyond its boundaries.
But the boundaries don't exist in the actual world of telecomunication, and the americans know they can be spied also.
Some are doing activism, but I think nobody is really surprised.
