When I become President of Eire (or SA...if I can get enough JACK votes) I'll make it a law that all EU citizens in Eire (residents or tourists alike) MUST visit SA for 2 weeks at least once every 10 years....and then sponsor a SA citizen to visit them in their country on a reciprocal visit...might just clear up a few misconceptions and do wonders for SA tourism & economy.

Great idea. Funny, it's always those who haven't been there who have the most to say about it. The people I've met here who have been (and go back regularly) absolutely love the country and its people
LadyDiz: Sorry True, but I'm extremely passionate about SA having been an activist in the past and seeing so many of my friends and comrades die that I lose my cool when people who did nothing sit and throw stones from the sidelines.

unlaoised: right so. perhaps you should go there before you cast judgement. I've lived in Ireland for 6 years and only now would I presume do so about this quaint little island.
I don't think I'm casting any judgement here. I have the feeling you got that impression. I'm living on that same little island for the last 15 years and even now I would not do so. Nationalist feelings run high here and it makes people overly sensitive.

unlaoised: Ahhh that explains it, thanks jim. I have family in Sydney and the sporting competitiveness between us is strong...and hilarious!
I'm just up the road from Sydney, well 4 hours drive up the road, which isn't far by our standards You're so right, the competiveness between us can be pretty funny at times.

the only positive thing you said in your post was about the wine, in fairness. yea, we all get a little sensitive when our homeland is bashed.

I think 3/4 of the world has Irish roots Seems that way anyway.
justjim63: Chris I'm a white Australian, does that mean I should vacate the country so that he Aboriginals can have it back? Where would I go? Maybe since I have Irish ancestory I could move back there? Somehow I don't think they'd have Me.
We ain't talking about Australia.Do you think is fair 87% of the land to be owned by (4 or 5 millions) whites, and only 13% by almost 40 million blacks????

Is South Africa even heard of in foriegn countries? That's the OP's original question. I wrote what I heard or read about SA. Where the bashing comes in is a mystery for me. That that what I heard or read is not positive and not to your liking is something I can't help with. But it is maybe a reflection on how the rest of the world, who did not visit your country, sees it. Up to SA to change its image internationally if it wishes so. Up to you to spread some positive feedback about SA

...one may ask...the same about Cyprus....who really owns it ...????? the Greeks.or the Turks.....should the Greeks leave... not being nasty........
StormMc: Somethings thats been on my mind that could do with some answering.
yes, SA is well known in the western world (cannot not speak for other cultures), besides Mr. Mandela, Dr Bernard, all major cities, and the political change.
SA is know in my area for the mining, gold, platinum, etc, and any change affects the financial world.
also, i do follow regulatory the news about History and human evolution discoveries in SA.

GUZMAN1: Gold mines, diamonds, lions and zebras everywhere. Or is it just a legend?
Not just a legend but the lions and zebras are in game reserves now. Although we do have diamonds of the sparkling variety, the real diamonds are the people.

Ooops this can start a fire, given Britain's role in Cyprus
I also agree that criticizing while choosing to live in a country and benefit from it is disingenuous and cowardly. There are a thousand things I dislike about the states, but the fact that I have chosen to stay and I'm able to make a living here (as a foreigner) means that it's net positive for me.
