I also agree that criticizing while choosing to live in a country and benefit from it is disingenuous and cowardly. There are a thousand things I dislike about the states, but the fact that I have chosen to stay and I'm able to make a living here (as a foreigner) means that it's net positive for me.
Whilst I'm not supporting the comments Chris made, or the way he chose to put them over, your post steffffie does not make much sense either. You say there are a thousand things you dislike about the States yet you make a living there. Isn't that really the same as Chris, except he chose to say exactly why he disliked SA ?
My father boxed in SA many times during the sixties and he loved it so much we were on the verge of emigrating until my mother put her foot down! I think I'm rather glad in hindsight, also given the fact that my Aunt, who worked there in the seventies, died in Johannesburg on a deserted road and the ambulance took an hour to arrive at the scene.
I work with someone who was born and brought up there until his early twenties and he would never go back due to the spiralling crime rate.

emerald888: Which one of your roots is Irish
What part of Ireland justjim
Back in the 1840's my family came out from a place called Newtownards grey abbey, I understand that it's in Northern Ireland near to Belfast, I know there was a lot of religious unrest back then and I found out that My ancestors were caught up in it. Thank goodness I'm not religious or I might be in trouble.
LadyDiz: And that's just Cape Town. Have you been to SA?
no never been, just found that pic. I wanted to go there on honeymoon, but I didn't win the tossing of the coin. Ended up in Dubai. Didn't bring me much luck. Maybe next time I will get my wish

StormMc: Somethings thats been on my mind that could do with some answering.
heard about the political issues with i think it was the former anc party leader. gold miner's dispute was a big story for awhile and Manuela's health problem's. mostly all from france24 not much on irish or british news feed's .
Maus19: Is South Africa even heard of in foriegn countries? That's the OP's original question. I wrote what I heard or read about SA. Where the bashing comes in is a mystery for me. That that what I heard or read is not positive and not to your liking is something I can't help with. But it is maybe a reflection on how the rest of the world, who did not visit your country, sees it. Up to SA to change its image internationally if it wishes so. Up to you to spread some positive feedback about SA
And that's exactly what we're doing here. South Africans, as with any nationality, are passionate about their country. It has serious problems, of that there is no doubt. Your post came across as a personal opinion, given where we were in the thread but now that I understand that it was simply media spin that you were quoting, my apologies for the misunderstanding

Let me clarify my opinion.
Living in a foreign country means implicitly supporting its policies and institutions. Disagreeing with or disliking some of them is understandable. Giving it some "tough love" is fine. But if one hates the country and thinks it's uniquely bad or rotten, then why stay?
Although I hate the American wars, drones, assassinations, spying and police state, I love the country and I appreciate the opportunities I was given, so that's why I've supported it with my feet. Chris, on the other hand, acknowledges no benefits from or appreciation for SA; only criticism and condemnation.

Very good points, Wholeheartedly agree, I live and work in China and God knows there is heaps wrong here, but I appreciate the work and living with the freedom I have here, far more than the political/social problems that make the newspapers.
And, Just like SA, few people actually really understand the past history and culture, sure some visit on holiday etc but thats not the same as living with the grassroots people in a tucked away province.

He said clearly "Chris, on the other hand, acknowledges no benefits from or appreciation for SA; only criticism and condemnation.” He did not attribute hate to you or your posts, but you love to stir don't you, not an attractive character trait

The tone of chris' posts is a clear indication of his feelings towards SA. I don't see Stefffie's post as pot stirring, rather than his expression of how he's intepreted those posts...and i concur.

you chris bother me, ive been in this country my whole life for you to be attacking me with this bunch of unsupported statements is absurd obviously there was going to be issues between the whites and the blacks since when they first met they were threats to eachother
no having said that i do not think it was right to have done what they did but that was the only way to prevent further violence because of the fact that these two groups hated eachother and saying that the british thought back then it was possible to colonize wherever they went hence america and various countries
you speak of south africa so low but you fail to see the country which is neighboring it named zimbabwe which literally chased the whites out of there land.. now is that right? and mixed race people were not as unfairly treated as the black people either. you can argue the whole day but you will not change the fact that this is one of the GREATEST in the universe even with the crime rate which everyone thinks is so bad but it actually has decreased significantly in the last 9 years

Exactly, which was why I replied to Chris's post and not to Steffies, I am also from Africa and understand only to well how the Europeans misunderstand many countries from that continent. Steffie's post are true and well written and I agree with all of them so far.

My critisism was solely on racial issues.-And you(out of topic) what are you doing in China,???standing by watching the political system ordering the people , ""Toe the line ,or else"" while doing nothing about it.

ah, fellow African, nice to meet you. yes, i read a previous post of yours. i reckon chris had a bad experience there and now dislikes the whole country because of it. oh well, can't win 'em all.

Says the man who allowed his country to become bankrupt and expects the rest of Europe to pay for it And your ignorance of China is understandable, actually I have more freedom of speech here than in the UK, and in over 4 years, no one has actually contacted me and told me to "toe the line" even when I discuss controversial subject with my students such as Mao, Tibet and Taiwan, you fall into the same trap as before, you quote from media and twisted news stories, without actually knowing what is true and what is BShhit
