RainComeShine: serene.... I'm a dog walker and I often feel quite guilty when I've got in the way of a cyclist but why the hell don't they ring their bell???
Not many bikes come with bells these days.
Speaking for myself, I would feel guilty if I was to shout to alert you of my presence, in case you thought I was just yelling at you to get out of my way, or I startled the dog. I would hang back and cycle as slow as I could, until the dog was aware I was there, and you turned around.

I have three different ones. A Road bike is for long distance. Very rarely does one encounter pedestrians, which usually have and I pod in anyway and are oblivious to their surroundings. Plus as 2 girls said, it would ruin the look of it. A Mountain bike I have is an off road machine for single track trails. My third is a single speed retro machine for commuting, city etc, but still fast. I just say when close enough, on your left, or on your right as a warning of my approach.

Here the law is Bikes must come with reflectors, but a Bell is optional. Helmets must be worn by anyone under age 18.(Ontario)
In New Zealand far North we have alot of one way bridges.Cyclists they will cruise them which is okay' but then as I go home I see, 1 coming, so I stop. But then there is 5 more cyclists moving where I cannot see, so have to back up on the bridge.. to save their lives...Theirs!!!!

RainComeShine: Cycling is a wonderful sport but in the public domain I think it should be exercised with respect and safety.
Should realise they're not invincible out on the road, and adjust they're riding practises accordingly.
I've been riding a bike since I was 5 ish, and have had dozens of them, from BMX, freestyle, to 10/12 speeds and mountain bikes, and still own 4 of them, which I ride, other than when winter shows up. I realised at an early age that you can't compete with a car, truck, or a city bus when jockeying for position on a city street. I wish the idiots out there would come to the same conclusion.
PS: A blinking light on the rear is never a bad idea, helps you from having your stool unnecessarily pushed in.

Of course this doesn't appl;y to all cyclists but everytime I see a near miss involving a silly cyclist and a motor vehicle I think, 'don't they realise that if they'd been killed that motorist has to live with that!'
Also a cyclist travelling in excess of 30mph on a down hill stretch where todlers are walking. Don't they realise that they would have to live with having hit that child.
