I'm ducking out of spending the holiday this year with family because long drive (8 hours at least), bad weather forecast, and I don't want to be stuck for 4 days when I know 4 hours would be more than enough.
Can't be with my favourite person who is stuck halfway across the world in a country which doesn't celebrate it.
Slobbing out instead with box-sets and eating at random times and quality time with the dog and cat. Every now and then I get a tiny flutter of panic about spending it alone, though. Just wondered how others felt.
Interesting, lots of views, a few votes, no comments. Usually polls go the other way.
Green with envy because I managed to duck the happy families get-together? Or so sorry for me you daren't even risk a hug in case I break down in tears?

How little you know me
So not my favourite time of year. Spending it pretty much like the last five or six years. Just me, my kids and their partners. Want nothing, need nothing more than that. That's my illusion

Kids are spending Christmas with their in-laws this year, so I'll be cooking dinner for those of my neighbors who are in a similar situation. Celebrations start at 2 p.m. (after I get home from some outdoor play) and end at ?. No one has to drive, so it'll only be a very short stumble home.
For the first time in 10 years, I don't have to do all the cooking and hosting this year I'm so excited!
So, I'll have everything I need to do, done by Xmas eve afternoon, drinks with friends that evening and head to my brother's place the next day for a late lunch with family and a few friends who would otherwise be alone

Ha, that's a top plan, but maybe you should stumble from house to house having a course at each? less cooking / washing up but okay, more stumbling. On the other hand, your way you do stay warm

YAY but that was another reason to avoid going down to daughter's, she has the whole tribe at hers and would expect me to pitch in and help. I'm a terrible mum ...

I don't mine helping, it'll just be nice not to be the one doing 99% of the work for a change....not to mention the clean up afterwards.

I miss having a housekeeper
I call my dishwasher Dorcas
Last time I went to daughter's I had the choice of
(a) watching her dotty gran like a hawk before she could put toothpaste in her hair, her knickers on over her clothes, or sit on anyone's lap seductively
or
(b) making the bread sauce, the brandy butter, laying the table, wrapping the last few presents, walking the dog, and opening the wine. I was exhausted. Fell asleep face first into the brandy butter. I do make extremely good brandy butter. Maybe all the taste-testing added to the exhaustion ...
