I think we should just "do" rather than worry who is giving or receiving.

I personally don't like receiving things. I am not good at accepting.... I love thinking about what to get and to giving it to a person. If you think it through just right; find the right thing; give it at the right time; and, know the person who you are giving to, the giving part is fantastic!

It is nice to receive, especially when it is someone who is special to you and it is a thoughtful gesture. However, in the long run, it is more fun and more satisfying to give, whether it is giving a gift to a friend or someone special, or if it is giving to or working for a charitable organization. Thing is, I can buy myself the things I want, so receiving really only as symbolic value--I like it when someone thinks of me and wants to give me a gift. But it's more fun to plan for and give a gift and it's more satisfying to give to those who are less fortunate. It's all good anyway. smile

I couldn't have said it better.

I mostly feel guilty when receiving a gift and have trouble accepting graciously........ but then one must put oneself in the mind of the giver and the joy they get if you show how happy the gift makes you.

Only a couple of weeks ago I bought my ex a few birthday presents - an antique ring, a new pc, the choice of a cruise in February next year and her own investment portfolio so she could work towards retiring a few years earlier than planned (ok, very selfish on my side as I wanted us to be together sooner rather than later!).

She liked the ring.

She didn't want the pc.

She was negative about the cruise (too expensive).

She made no comment about the portfolio - needed her passport details etc to set up for her....

The MY birthday just over a week ago and she wanted to but me clothes. I refused to let her as she'd have dictated where I could keep them (i.e. I'd have to leave them in Germany) and when I could wear them.

I let her buy me an electric toothbrush - which is what I wanted - that made me happy, but she wasn't as she wanted to be 100% in control of everything in my life!

She like the ring. She didn't want the pc. She was unethusiastic
