crotalus_p: That's not the context Marks put it in

Ah, tis one of my favourite quotes - in its entirety thumbs up

The quotation, in context, reads as follows (emphasis added):

Religion is, indeed, the self-consciousness and self-esteem of man who has either not yet won through to himself, or has already lost himself again. But man is no abstract being squatting outside the world. Man is the world of man—state, society. This state and this society produce religion, which is an inverted consciousness of the world, because they are an inverted world. Religion is the general theory of this world, its encyclopedic compendium, its logic in popular form, its spiritual point d'honneur, its enthusiasm, its moral sanction, its solemn complement, and its universal basis of consolation and justification. It is the fantastic realization of the human essence since the human essence has not acquired any true reality. The struggle against religion is, therefore, indirectly the struggle against that world whose spiritual aroma is religion. Religious suffering is, at one and the same time, the expression of real suffering and a protest against real suffering. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people. The abolition of religion as the illusory happiness of the people is the demand for their real happiness. To call on them to give up their illusions about their condition is to call on them to give up a condition that requires illusions. The criticism of religion is, therefore, in embryo, the criticism of that vale of tears of which religion is the halo.

Yes, I also loose respect at about the same point, but I will always keep an open mind to the views of others.

I think, what I am probably trying to say with the poll/thread, is that I know I am not perfect, or right all the time, so am keen to hear the voices of others in the hope they may change my mind for the better.

I have been frustrated in the last week by the number of posts that were aimed at trying to change peoples religious views.... nothing wrong with that, but to ask a question and then shout down those that join the thread wanting to debate the issues in a reasonable manner, just beats me.

My conclusion is that aethiests, whether they have been religious in the past or not, at least have the abilty to look at both sides of the story and debate it in a reasonable manner, without the need to loose their cool.

There are a few Christian organisations which direct their followers to infiltrate the internet in the hope of preying on lost souls - my suspicion is that many of these threads are started by such individuals - we do get inundated with them from time to time (same as with other scammers) which is why I become 'recative' at such opportunity - most of the time I just keep my gob shut laugh

Heres such a site just as an illustration;

If it was said that i have any religion at all then it would be the personal values of my own heart.Peace,love,and try to be a friend to someone even if they do not want my friendship.Be a friend to them anyway.I do not think that is religion cause i have found very few religious people with those same values.Books were written,and we read them.Some of the things written are good,and some are bad.Point being ;You can not deny a truth if you do not know it to be a fact.conversing conversing

rizlared: I truly believe that if the "Masses" were to read the appalling, corrupt and violent history of the Vatican, even the most brainwashed believer would start to question the validity of this institution. Sadly this history is brushed under the carpet during Sunday School lessons.

I wonder why
I know about some of it, and am deeply saddened by the corruption.

Englishman55: How many of the Aethiests amongst you have actually changed your mind by becoming involved in a religious dabate on these forums.

I see strong arguements both for and against, but I cannot actually see anyone changing sides.

Are the religious zealots actually wasting their energy here ?

Before anyone questions me.... I am "spritual"

Thankyou for your responses
