Englishman55: How many of the Aethiests amongst you have actually changed your mind by becoming involved in a religious dabate on these forums.
I see strong arguements both for and against, but I cannot actually see anyone changing sides.
Are the religious zealots actually wasting their energy here ?
Before anyone questions me.... I am "spritual"
Thankyou for your responses
Well I am an athiest, ergo, could not have changed my mind.
If I was athiest and then not then I could have changed my mind but alas the question was aimed at athiests so if they put their hands up as athiests, then they have not changed their mind. Does that make sense.

To a simple mind like mine ....... No, not at all !
I had a little chuckle when I read this... I think you´ll find that while many atheists were once believers, it´s pretty rare that it goes the other way...

That was one of my thoughts also, when I created the poll, but thought I would leave it to the "believers" to create their own one on that point.
It would be interesting to see how their question was worded..... whether it would be straightforward of up for misinterpretation !!
Englishman55: I been waiting for him to pop round too, but then I suppose it's because I don't nip round to his house either !!
Did you notice how, for a catholic country, Italians are so against the Pope and that the number of people attending religious services is falling rapidly, when I was in Pisa many of my friends said they were fast turning agnostic due to the laws and rules laid down by their religion that were utterly senseless, together with the hypocrisy of the Vatican. When even the people of Rome turn against the Vatican, those who believe devoutly must question their beliefs. IMO

I know what you mean Riz, and yes I have noticed how many Italians are not actually practising Catholics.
You make mention of those who are devout in the religion, which to me is someone who is brainwashed into the beliefs in the firstplace and unwilling to accept another viewpoint in the second place, which is why I raised the issue as a poll...... I was fed up with listening to religious Zealots asking a question of Aethiests and then not being willing to listen to the answers, preffering to spout their own beliefs in the hope it would change someones mind.
At risk of upsetting a few, it is my view that educational standards have improved enough to allow people to make up their own minds about religion, without the need to be subjugated into a belief !
as jbibiza said...mostly people tend to start questioning those things thought in their childhood.....
...and by the time they become adults have become agnostics or atheist....
...on the other hand I am all for the total freedom of those who believe to do so....and may which ever God they believe in....be with them on their journey....

My Italian friends all have a saying... "It will be a good day when I wake up and Berlusconi is no longer in office and the Pope has moved back to France"

Yes I heard this many times, the pope and berlusconi are like two peas in a pod, motivated by greed rather than the desire to look after their own people. Two very corrupt individuals.
trish123: a big sigh of relief from me for such good news
Papal history is very colourful to say the least
I truly believe that if the "Masses" were to read the appalling, corrupt and violent history of the Vatican, even the most brainwashed believer would start to question the validity of this institution. Sadly this history is brushed under the carpet during Sunday School lessons.
A "man of the cloth" turned me from a believer to an agnostic. Life events have me bordering on atheist. Organized religion is the opiate of the masses. Brainwashing at its best.

" Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. "
Thats from a rather interesting article on another papal crisis;

trish123: Many have tried but I tend to lose respect around the same time they lose their tempers
Brilliant thread Englishman, thank you very much
Thankyou Trish Yes, I also loose respect at about the same point, but I will always keep an open mind to the views of others.
I think, what I am probably trying to say with the poll/thread, is that I know I am not perfect, or right all the time, so am keen to hear the voices of others in the hope they may change my mind for the better.
I have been frustrated in the last week by the number of posts that were aimed at trying to change peoples religious views.... nothing wrong with that, but to ask a question and then shout down those that join the thread wanting to debate the issues in a reasonable manner, just beats me.
My conclusion is that aethiests, whether they have been religious in the past or not, at least have the abilty to look at both sides of the story and debate it in a reasonable manner, without the need to loose their cool.
