Keeneland: Yes sure what can we learn from history eh....no point in lookin back.
Well, yes, we can learn a lot from history and the point in looking back is to make sure the same mistakes are not made again. As long as the old hatreds are not carried forward its all good

I lived in ireland and never experienced any hostility to me, maybe not happen that I was from a country with a damning historical colonial past but never against me personally. I agree lets look to the future or the alternative is live a life in the past with bitterness that will change nothing historically. This post is also for Keeno as well. Slainte

Im half Irish, half English. I lived in both countries for a long time and have to say this..
I did notice, sadly, when I was still in Ireland (up to August of this year), a few younger members on the Irish Forum who were somewhat hostile toward me because I was not "pure blood". I found it worrying, and somewhat upsetting.
I fully appreciate that these people are in the minority in Ireland, but still, do exist, and due to the severe pressure on the economy as regards jobs, a feeling of anti-Irish does seem more prevalent than it did a few years ago. To be expected, I suppose, as we are all fighting for jobs these days.
Sad, but true..
However, IN THE MAJORITY, the Irish are a welcoming, fun loving and friendly people..

I never really bothered talking religion or politics but must admit I was told to stay clear of one or two pubs but had no hostility when there. And I was in one of the worst cities in Ireland.

Maybe all the Irish people are just afraid of you because if they touch you they know Moonwoman will give them a beatdown

FriendlyFeline: I know of a group of young lads, early 20's, who all sing the ballads and take it very seriously if someone tries to interupt them. It's like male bonding or something. But they all usually grow out of it.
Funny enough, I like the old ballads and growing up in liverpool know the words to all the rebel songs. The Irish music is so so so good, where do you think Paul Mac and John Lennons roots where.

A lot of the songs were written from the heart and when sung well are lovely to listen to.
