Swissblueeyes: I've lost count of how many guys have messaged me with spelling as bad as a 5 year old, but their profile says they are a "engineer" or in some other big profession?? Makes me think either they are lying or used cheat sheats in college.

Dyslexia affects 5-10% of the population, but does not affect intelligence, or the ability to achieve in all sorts of fields.

Somebody who is a high achiever, but cannot spell is not necessarily lying.

I spot typical dyslexic spelling errors reasonably regularly, but its notable that I've not yet seen anybody with a phonemic block on the forums. I suspect self-conciousness and an awareness of difficulties communicating in the written word, coupled with threads like this, or frequent put downs regarding correct spelling, inhibit some folk from posting.

Spell check is a wonderful thing for small errors, but is completely useless if you have a phonemic block. You have to have some concept of a particular spelling in order for it to be checked.

Its a shame because people with dyslexia are often creative, lateral thinkers with a sharp wit.

In my university days, it has been noted that most people who are good in math and math-related subjects have poor language skills. This has been observed among engineering students then. The limitations includes bad syntax, incorrect spelling, and mispronunciations. Perhaps it has something to do with which side of the brain is more dominant. I am not sure if this applies to everybody else around the world. dunno

People who put others down for spelling ability ,it says more about those with criticim than those who dont spell correctly ..

And those who criticize have something lacking in there personality wich is probably the first signs of even more to come ..but are that elitetist in mind set they havnt even got the I.Q to think the rest of us can notice ..

Thank god were not in the 17th century ,they would still be condemming left handed people to the ducking stool ...devil

I have to disagree with this statement, June. I have two family members with Ph.D. in Mathematics and each of them are fluent in 3 languages, learnt fast and with ease.

As a matter of fact All students seeking Ph.D. in Mathematics must be proficient in one of foreign languages.

I am a college instructor and I see a lot of text message language in college papers. It is sad when people don't know basic spelling and English.

No.....

In New Zealand back in the 60's,....our education was number one in the world at that time of writing reading skills,
It was a skill that was so ingrained by the family and our schools.
I remember such wonderful books my mother gave to me and trying to read then whilst hesitantly thinking its going to be lights out soon!

I'm really stoked that when I look back that it was what I had before me, sadly over
the years our education system, and family values, has been falling by the wayside.

When I write, I like to have a good command on my writings, I do not challenge or turn back a snide, when that person does does not know how to write, or dyslexic in may colors.....

Hence in my contribution to my society here in New Zealand, I teach remedial reading... outside of my corporate work, 3 times times a month.

The frame of being able to write, if children can read, they will always want and will know how to write

They are all young children from 7 to 10, (from many parts of town) that just do not have any input from family, I wish I could do more, but at least I feel, I give what I can.

If it helps and steers just that one child, then I am so humbly happy.....

cool

Like Laura25, I too disagree with your assumptions.
If anything, Engineering (technical) people tend to write in short and to the point sentences. As for languages, I speak and write three languages and can communicate in an other one.
