I think it is a matter of inner belief which exists in a person or not. I heard the version very often that belief is a gift from God. A difficult item to understand..

Here in Europe we are not allowed to defend ourselves to the extent of killing, except when being threatened to death by someone and when having no other way out. Killing intruders would be considered as pure murder here.
