RE: Another NCT issue.........

Are the garda strict?......Yes....

If your NCT is out of date and you have no proof of a booking / appointment you are considered as driving un-insured, and im not winding you up....You will get hammered with points and a fine...
If you havn't done so already, then contact the NCT booking line soon as possible and get a booking confirmed, have them send the appointment details to your phone, and presto, your legal again...
There is a PDF on the NCT website that tells you all the requirements for NCT, do download and read if you feel inclined, or simply read the base requirments from the booking page...

Good luck...

RE: Another NCT issue.........

Correct....If you tested your car as late as july and it passed, you would have 6 months before your next test date....Nice eh!....

RE: Another NCT issue.........

The reason you got 10 months and change is due to the anniversarial systen of testing...The DOE system for vans and commercials in the republic is the same as the UK MOT system, take your car in any old day and get it tested, and you get a years ticket where ever and whenever you go in...
Applus (the testing authority) and its predecessor worked the system on the date of your cars first registration, you can however get a grace period running into your test, and while im not certain, i believe its 2 monthts, so, you could get as much as 14 months test on your car, and that really is about as good as it gets....
AS for your friends car, that sounds very suspect to me, but i wont doubt what you say, but somone is playing fast and loose with NCT legality, and heads would roll if it were found out....

RE: Another NCT issue.........

Age 0 yrs to 4 yrs.......No NCT needed...
Age 4 yrs to 10 yrs.......NCT every 2 years, on anniversary of regestration...
Age 10 yrs and over.....NCT every year....This is the current legal requirement, anyone telling you different is wrong....

Is Cheese on Toast.......

I had a suspicion someone would ask the question about ham....

Once upon a time there was a sandwich, his name was Cecil (as in Cecil the sandwich), it was a lovely day in Latvia, and Mr Chicatillo was wondering how to improve life for the inhabitants of his small village community...
Now, in such tales, there is always the artistic licence for a talking sandwich, and Cecil was one such sandwich...'Ham' cried Cecil, Brilliant cried Mr Chicatillo, and so it was so....the birth of sam hamwidges, but cheese was not impressed, the ham and cheese wars of the late 19 centuary put the cheese and ham 'hybrid' on hold untill the cheese and ham treaty of versaiies (it was done under the disguise of a post world war treaty to alley suspicion of cheese supremacist councils abhorant dislike of any kind of cheese tainting), of course, such things now are a distant memory and cheese and ham can share the same pieces of bread and children and adults the world over can smile in the knowlegde they are getting world beating nutrition without the threat of gun usage in the dairy aisle between one time sworn enemies....

I hope that clears up any confusion....

RE: Farewell HMV

With the download culture so prevalent, it was only a matter of time before this happened, recon Xtravision will be the next casualty...
Gonna be a toughy for those who dont have good enough web connectivity ...
Personally, its been six months since I braught a DVD and over a year since i spent cash on a CD...
300 employees and 14 branches will be effected in Ireland (dunno if thats the north as well)...
The changing face of how we do our shopping (online) has had a lasting effect on high street shops who simply cant compete with low cost overheads of internet traders and the customer convenience of same...
Shame, I grew up with fond memories of Woolworths in England, and when they went to the wall i was truely shocked, 'how could this be allowed to happen, a british institution', but business is no respecter of 'tradition', money, profits and shareholder dividends are key....
Ill miss the Saturday's spent traipsing round HMV while the others dive into Harvy Nicks and Handbag World, t'will see me sitting in the car on a Saturday afternoon listening to the footy on the wireless instead...Boring!....sigh....

RE: Second hand car help

27 years of experience with dealerships and independant garages should make me qualified to give advice...

Jimney's have weak gearbox bearings in the input shaft area, if (as is likely) the vehicle is out of warranty your looking a very big bill in the face for gearbox removal and a strip and repair..

Volkswagen Polo...
I have encouraged all my family to get the 1.2 three cylinder timing chain models, they took my advice, and i just see the cars come service time...Happy them, happy me....

Like Godsgift said, opel / vauxhall chain drive cars, trouble, self adjusters give problems, seldom the same afterwards...

Toyotas, lovely vehicles, but high residual prices, and sellers know that (same with VW's), In spite of what people will tell you (cos they are not experts), Renault still make some nice practical small cars...Modus (the best value for money) was the least problematic in my 5 years at BCMG Ennis...

Im sure you will hear all sorts of comments here from people with opinions, but if they have not worked with cars they are guessing and running on heresay...

If you want to know more, PM me and ill return your enquirey....

Work or Learn?....

Having My Cake and Eating It...

Well, what a day, life is like a London bus, you wait for ages and then a load appear all at once...
So it is with work and the wanting man...
In what can only be discribed as rediculously improbible, I have been offered work in 2 garages on the same day, really, talk about god (small g) working in mysterious ways...

The fellow at the dealership is behind me finishing my course and looks prepaired to give me 'hours to suit' on the strength of my gearbox smarts (oh happy days), with a full time post if it all works out in May, should I not get work in healthcare...
Life it seems, really is a bowl of cherries!....

Oh, and if your having problems with your 2 dogs trying to eat the face of your cat while she is eating their dog food (notice i didnt stoop so low as to use the "P" word), speak to them in the style of the character 'Baine', out of the movie The Dark Night Rises...
Works like a charm.....Though i recon a James Earl Jones would cut it as well...

Jac, Serenity, Stan and Dog thanks for your words (or word, in Dog's case) of wisdom and encouragment...

AB....cheers.....

Work or Learn?....

You ask the big questions that i will a have to ask of myself...

In fairness jac, my reply could easily break the 4000 character limit of thread replies, but in short, I loved doing gearboxes and I was bloody good at it...If I had the premesis and a business head to go with it, i would do it with a happy heart...
Unfortunatly, I have the business brain of a springer spaniel (of which I have cosiderable knowledge, as i own one), and the grounds around the house resemble a third world football pitch (im rambling)...

The healthcare course is as you say, littered with 'burn outs' and there is plenty to consider with my age and skill set, which is proving less toward community care and more towards community development...I would be lying if I said I wouldn't like to see where the course will eventually take me, and sure, I have discoivered things about myself in the last 13 weeks that frankly, had you have said "you can do this", I would have replied, "tish and fipsey"....

We suprise ourselves (and others) with our hidden talents jac, but the grinding wheels of "we want your money", grind ever onward, and so its a trade off, not high drama, just practicality, how does the next bill get paid, who do i say no to next, what doesn't get done that needs doing?...

Sadly, the luxuary of choice is only realy a choice for those whom it is no luxuary to, so, i must be 'practical'....
I now know im capable of bigger things, but the timing of such is no respecter of the need to be waving rather than drowning...
Guess you can tell which way im thinking (but sociology is so interesting, perhaps i can do a distance learning degree)....

Be well jac, and a very happy new year to you and the hedhgehogs of the world...

AB....

Work or Learn?....

I'm confronted with an un-expected choice....

Carry on with my Health and Community Care Course which I enjoy and am doing very well at, or take an offer of work in my specialised fields of Gearbox and Engine Rebuilding for a reputable car dealership in West Clare ...

The course is very tight money (once travel costs are factored), and there is no guarentee of work at the end, but the satisfaction of getting good results is a big boost, even if 'getting there' academicaly is nerve wracking...

The Car job will eventually be like 'shelling peas', as was the job I did with Renault, but the money is good, the position is secure, and the business 'head hunted' me (formal interview today), not the otherway round...

I will very likely have to make a choice, and at the moment of this post its up in the air (5 grand of severance only goes so far), but this time tomorrow, i will either be telling my course tutor, 'thanks and goodbye', or looking for the next thing to cut back on to make the money streach further...

Im not looking for advice (i will do what feels right on the day), but I would be interested in what you would do given a similar set of circustances...

RE: person of the year on CS

Serenity...(my vote)...

There are many good posters on the forums, and there are some I wouldn't involve myself with, but for what its worth, there are a lot worse places to spend a few hours of your evening time...

For those I have overlooked, and there are many, thanks for corispondance and laughs along the way...Hope to see you in the new year...

RE: Plenty of Fish in the Sea but........

I havn't read the whole lot but I get the gist of things....

Free sites are unlikely to be the place to make that serious connection...Because its free, many (and im not generalising here) of the users have little invested in making any proper effort to communicate and find a relationship of substance...Sure, you have only to read the 2,3 and 4 line profiles and general 'couldn't be botheredness' to get a handle on it, but in contrast there are some fantastic profiles written that involve and engage the reader, these are 'manna from heaven', and they do yeald results (you know who you are!), and you will really get the hang of a person by their forum contributuions, the real meat on the bones so to speak...

Pay sites by nature sugest more of a comittment to finding a mate or partner than free sites...However, finding someone here, on Fish or the other site (god knows, i cant remember its name now) is still a possible...

Im no looker, im not wealthy, I dont have power or influence...I can talk freely and confidantly, I am respectfull, and I do make every effort to see my friends are looked after in whatever way, shape of form that might be...
I have had plenty of dates from here and fish, Ok, none have lasted to date, thats the way things go, people are diffo in real life to their 'interlives', but if i have not met the person I will engage in with an LTR, then I have at least made some friends, and had some good times along the way...

As luck would have it, I have met a charming woman from this site, and Im happy to say, things are very good indeed, and heres the rub, we wrote about 10 e-mails total over a year period, with no agenda, just jibba jabba, as ya do...We met at the Bunratty meet in the middle of the year, and 'just clicked', quite the comfortable so it was...It was 6 weeks later we met up again for a 'catch up' and a curry!...and here we are, happy out!...It was not arduious hard back breaking sweat inducing toil, it just happend in an unforced and nautral way all by itself!, whats not to like there?...

Scroibs, however much one would like to 'move the process along', its gotta be said, unless you have a fistfull of aces, the whole 'relationship thang' is organic, I could offer up any number of platitudes, but being a smart fella, you already know 'whats what and whats not'...
As some have probbo already said, there are a lot worse things in this life than being single...Enjoy your life, enjoy yourself, be carefree and thankfull for the friends you have...I really cant add much more to that to be honest...

In closing, CS serves a purpose, it gets people away from the telly for a while and creates a bit of 'Panto' for the crowds, not so sure i can say the same of Fish or the other site which i still cant remember the bloody name of....

Ok so, have a good day, catch ya later...

Got to go "Im having a friend over for dinner!".....(fava beans, chianti...dunno!)....

AB.... cheers ....

America let Lhemans go to the wall, why didnt we do the same with Anglo...

The rumblings of 'If we didnt pay, there would be no ATM cash', scare tactics or hidden truth?...

What shape should a public revolt take, and furthermore, whats the straw to break the camels back...

Sofars post on 'punitive costs' to cancer patients should be a wake up call to every person in Ireland, just as it was to me when i heard it on the radio the same day, BUT why was it not mentioned in the budget the week before...
Did this working document take a mere 7 days to gestate....I DOUBT IT...

So there, ill say im no accademic with money matters, and you lot can feed my brain with your answers...

AB....cheers....

RE: EATING IN THE UK IN THE FIFTIES. Bit long but I thought some of you would like to know what life was

They do indeed.....

Meccano...
Airfix Models...(and that amazing smelling glue!), making a comeback so it would seem...
Corgi 'die cast' model cars...the famous gold DB4....
Torches made of chrome and red, 'Eveready', with those socking great big batteries with 'springs on top'....
The first time you saw a 'black man'....
Everyone had an auntie 'Eileen'....
Sandie Shaw and her 'bare feet'....
Bamber Gascoign, looking no older than the students he was quizzing!...
Steak and Kidney Pudding, but it wasnt a pudding was it!....(also known as 'snake and pygmy pudding', us kids eh'!)
Getting the cane at school and the slipper at home....
Headmasters were the 'Law givers', and woe betide if you were a messer....
"Wait till you're father gets home"....(nuff said)...
Anything mechanical had 'Chrome' on it....
Holidays in 'Bognor', and the parents eating muscles and whelks while sitting in deckchairs on the prom (tiddly om pom pom)...
Reginald Bosenquet read the news, and there was no graphics or 'vox pop'....
Fred Dinage, Bunty James, Jack Hargreaves and 'who', said HOW!....
The original 'Blue Peter', before Peter Purvis....
Dr Who, with William Hartnell....

And all this remembered without Google....Looks like im not senile just yet....

AB....(now where did i leave my walking frame)...laugh....

Hedgehogs.....the facts....

Did you have Hedgehog Crisps in Ireland in the 80's? The company donated a percentage of their profits to hedgehog rescue services, but the company disappeared because people thought the Original Flavour ones were made out of hedgehogs. It was just herbs and spices.

Hi Jac....

As an ex pat, I remember them first time around, they never quite connected with me....but i do remember the original cheese flavoured pringles in the orange tubes, god what an MSG nightmare they were............and i couldn't stop eating them!....
Oh, and 'twiglets', I have a bit of a thing for them, and so far i havn't found them here in the south (or the north so it seems!)....

AB....handshake....

Goodnight boys and girls, AB has got school tomorrow and must stop talking in the third person.....

RE: Just when you thought we couldn't sink any lower!

Nearly choked on my toast when i heard this on newstalk this morning...

GG make some bloody good points in his post....
For the love of god, when are the people going to take a stand, and more to the point, how can we take a stand....

You can laugh, i can afford to pay my tv licence or my house insurance, not both, my savings are dwindling so its goodbye tv, what if i still had the kids at home!, were being forced into making choices we should not be having to make...All this after years of hard work and playing by the rules...

Gleneagle, whatever you have to say about people on welfare, dont judge them as malingerers just because they may be claiming for a long while, the jobs out there call for retraining (which im doing) and a whole new set of marketplace skills that few are naturally set up for...

After my training, there are still no guarentees ill get a job, in what will by then be an overcrowded jobs market area (community health care)...Catch 22 anyone?....

AB....thumbs up

RE: Breaking Bad fans

Theres a world of good series coming out of America in the last few years, but the sheer quality of script and acting in BB puts it far above the rest of the pack...

The characters of Walt, Jesse, Skyler, Walt jnr, Saul (brilliant beyond belief) and 'Pollos' are so bang on within their roles its scarey...

Vince Gilligan (creator / writer and occasional director) has said he does not know how to end the 5th season, and since the character arc of Walt Snr has gone into the 'power vaccum' area since the death of Guss Frang, the possibilities are that the first 5 seasons could act as a 'warm up' for greater developments....

After all said and done BB is the most watchable and intellegent piece of US tv drama in the last 5 years, and i defy anyone to say different after they have seen the first series...

AB...(BB fan, unless you hadn't guessed)

RE: Strangest or most disturbing film you have seen

As mentioned here.....

The Cook the Thief, his Wife and her Lover, pure genius, Peter Greenaways finest and most shocking film...

Johnny got his Gun, saw it when i was in my early tyeens, and boy did it freak me out...

Severance, utter tosh, but more than enough jumps in it...

and suprisingly, unmentioned.....(drumroll)....

Hellraiser (1987), Clive Barkers film directing debut, what an amazing piece of nightmarish moviemaking it was, and NO cgi, all model work and prosthetics, and done on a meagre budget....

AB.....thumbs up.....

RE: i'm back smoking

Get off them now Pedro, really man, they are poison....

I quit 12 weeks ago through having the mother of all chest infections, tell ya now im feeling the benefits...
Ya need to find a conscious replacement for them, i dunno, seeds, nuts, polo's...anything really...
Everyone here will offer moral support, even if its dressed up as 'messin', so dont let the last few weeks be a wasted effort....
YOU CAN DO IT!....
