RE: Life

SOfar.....who is the person on this thread who works in the field who agreed with you, who wasnt quoting some friend or family member? It wasnt skyblue.

Another friend of a friend quote.
The person I know who works with those with learning difficulties is my sister in law who lectures here and abroad on dealing with these issues.

And as for skyblues comment.....I agree with it. So why would I jump down this throat about it. It is an unfortunate case that those kids will never have the opportunity to succeed.

RE: Life

I do believe that nurture/environment plays a MASSIVE part in how we turn out...thats not in any doubt in my head.
But I also believe that genetics play their part too.

What you and he are missing is that I have repeatedly said that I agree with him when he says that the majority of people with SEVERE learning disabilities would not be able to complete a degree.
I dont know how many more times I can say that.

Its like two married friends of mine who used to argue and argue getting louder and louder, each wanting the other to admit they were wrong when in actual fact they both had the same opinion.
I threw them out of my house one night.....each still protesting they were right and the other one wrong and neither accepting that they actually were agreeing with the other.

In all of this entire issue the only thing I really objected to was the saying the vast majority of people with learning disabilities would not be able for a degree. This comment included a HUGE range of disabilities most of which are an impairment to learning but by no means makes it impossible.

RE: Life

I do not believe this to be true.

You are saying that a child born from two parents in the top 5 percentile of the IQ scale is born with exactly the same predisposition to learning as a child born from parents in the lower end of the IQ scale???

Its my opinion that there is a certain amount down to genetics, we get more than the colour of our eyes and hair from our parents.

RE: Life

Sofar.....there is nobody disputing the fact that the majority of people with SEVERE learning disabilities would probably not be able to complete a degree. In all honesty it was your wildly general statement that most people with learning disabilities couldnt. This was what the PC brigade took issue with.
As pointed out again and again you changed the goalposts from comment to comment.
You say that anyone with half a brain would have known what you meant.......so you are calling people in here who have degrees, who are intelligent people......stupid?????

If you want people to know what you mean.....then say what you mean.

As for the above comment on colleges asking people whether or not they have disabilities.......that shows you havent been to college any time recently. Asking if someone attending college if they have a disabilities covers a wide range of things INCLUDING learning disabilities not just, as you so think....whether or not they are in a wheelchairdoh

It can mean do they have a learning disability and require help with issues....The college could then accommodate the person with the learning disability with maybe allowing the student record the lecture so they can listen to it again and not have to read/write notes......to providing rooms for taking exams where the student is on their own and not distracted by a hall full of other people.

RE: Life

Damn I mean social worker not school worker.

RE: a good hair cut

Green sleeves is right about the poll he did a few weeks back.
The tight cut was most preferred.
Maybe go tight at the sides and a little longer on the top.....but not too long.

But go for what you are comfortable with. If you dont want to go to a 3, then try a 4 and if its too long get them to do a 3 etc.

RE: Life

My friend is a school worker albeit in a different country and there is has been recognised that a lot of children being diagnosed as having ADD or ADHD do NOT in actual fact have them. They are primarily from emotionally and structurally deprived families where they have not learned a large proportion of the skills necessary for normal day to day living and become difficult to handle and act up to the extent that they are diagnosed with ADD or ADHD and medicated. Whereas a different family life/upbringing would not have produced these symptoms.
This is where nurture trumps nature.

Before anyone thinks otherwise I am in no way shape or form saying all, nor most nor any sort of majority of those with ADD etc are from deprived homes, I am says that in some instances it is the case.

RE: Life

just thought I would put this up....it gives a brief overview of the types of learning difficulties.

Although I have a rather decent IQ, I have a visual processing difficulty. Meaning that learning by reading doesnt work well for me. I am a visual learner. Especially powerpoint presentations as I tend to remember them very well as I recall them as pictures.
My glasses are tinted to make reading easier, nor can I read in strong daylight and my son had heavily tinted glasses for when the teacher uses the whiteboard at school. These glasses reduce the contrast of the writing on the white and stop the words merging and flowing into each other. Give me an A4 white of white paper full of text and I have to curve the page to be able to read it otherwise I will miss lines/words, re-reading lines over again as the whole page becomes a pattern.

Something as simple as that is classed as a learning disability.

RE: Life

I personally think that we will the life we choose, whether or not WE have chosen to live the life others would like us to.
But there are many many reasons we may choose to not live up to our potential just as there are many reasons that our circumstances might not allow us to achieve great things either.

I think nature has a lot to do with things...giving us the foundation as which to build on. Then nurture plays its part.

RE: Life

I think the only problem is making wildly general statements and saying they are facts. Saying most with learning difficulties cant do a degree.....then when challenged changing it to severe learning disabilities. Whereas I might agree to the capacity for a lot of people with SEVERE learning difficulties to complete a degree I in no way whatsoever agree with MOST (ie over 50%) of those with learning disabilities not being able to complete a degree.

RE: rise of the planet of the apes

I agree about the monkeys in the Zoo. Was there on wednesday and I dont know exactly what the orangutans were at but all the adults moved away red faced and the kids didnt bat an eyelid....laugh

RE: Criminal Records...

probably..lol
Here its to do with the stone the houses are made from and why they were build in the first place.

RE: nearly the weekend again. yay!

lol....When I say maybe to any question my son asks me he goes.......yeeeeeessssssssss!!!!!! rolling on the floor laughing

RE: Criminal Records...

The entire village has a preservation order on the houses, nothing can be changed, all wires (phone/tv etc) have to go in through the backs of the houses and also no major change can be done to the interior of the houses either without permission (no knocking walls or lifting floorboards/changing doors or windows etc)
But its a really nice place to live nonetheless.

And I'm on track to win the best window box in the village too....cheering

RE: Criminal Records...

Id rather make the most of this one than be wishing for something better in another one.

RE: Criminal Records...

Something makes me think we all have one of those....its all about what we make of the one we have.

RE: Criminal Records...

You would have gotten a fine from the court date you didnt attend. Ive no idea why you havent heard anything about it if you havent moved house.

As for you HC.....tongue tongue tongue

RE: Criminal Records...

The fine was paid so I didnt have to go to prison.
It was paid in the garda barracks by a family member while I was in the cell waiting for the van to come to transport me to mountjoy.
If it had to have gotten to the stage whereby I was brought to the joy....i would have a criminal record, as such I dont.
In fairness I had had plenty of warning in the 2 months beforehand about paying the fine.....but its a whole other thing when they arrive on a sunday night when I was in my pjs and not allowed to get dressed without the female garda watching me in my room before I was put into the back of a squad car.

RE: Criminal Records...

when was your court date?
between my first court date and bring arrested was 16-18months.
Then again if you have moved house I would wonder how they would track you down.

RE: nearly the weekend again. yay!

Maybe innocent

RE: nearly the weekend again. yay!

yep tipsy.......i might talk.....so what you want me to say?????

#Cant say if i will be coherent much longer though.

RE: nearly the weekend again. yay!

I'm getting very tipsy and giggling a lot.....

next thing you know i might be boogie

RE: The mayonnaise jar and two cups of coffee...!

thumbs up

RE: Criminal Records...

Spent a few hours in a cell awaiting transport to mountjoy for tv licence issues. Was up for driving thing too...no tax etc. Got most of that thrown out and then the minimum fines possible for the rest.

Other than that.....no drunk and disorderly or drugs.

RE: Could you disappear?

I have thought about it but in truth there is no-one I would want to raise my child full time. He's practically 'shared' between myself and my parents at the moment as he spends a huge amount of time with them....works incredibly well for him, them and me. But as for just leaving him......god no.

Now if I didnt have my son then yes I could do it.
I used to spend 6-8 months here and there with work before I had him....so if i was in that line of work still then I reckon I could quite easily disappear and it would take a week or two before friends or family would question why i hadnt been in touch.

RE: nearly the weekend again. yay!

There is an Oyster festival in my local village this weekend so the place with be mental busy.
Dont think I will go anywhere near it though.

RE: nearly the weekend again. yay!

I'm away for a few days down in Dublin tongue

RE: nearly the weekend again. yay!

Ah I'm sure someone will come to your rescue HC laugh

RE: would ye rather meet the person of your dreams or win the lotto?

Its as much about us being the right person for someone.......
as it is about finding the right person.

RE: would ye rather meet the person of your dreams or win the lotto?

unfortunately if you won the euro millions you have to go public its one of the terms and conditions of winning.
