RE: Stem Cell Research

Fetuses from abortions would not work as well as most or all of the stem cells have already begun to differentiate into specific cells. 5 day old embryos are still the preferred medium.

RE: Stem Cell Research

The last that I heard though, is that stem cells from a newborns cord blood will produce only blood cells and cord tissue is capable of producing bone and cartilage cells. As with adult stem cells, the pluripotency of the cords stem cells is limited.

RE: Question for the Ladies

How totally unselfish of you to ask for things that can be shared with a special someone...especially the mitre saw! cheering

RE: To go to the ER or not??

Well said Lorraine - think of it this way Tracy: would you rather put up with the doctor's looking at you the wrong way or having something serious happen to the child?

RE: To go to the ER or not??

...seems as if I was posting the same time as you 2 girls were!

anyway...hope that both of your kids get better soon!

RE: To go to the ER or not??

My eldest son - at about 6 months of age - had chronic coughing and our doctor (a quack) kept telling us it was nothing more the croup. Well, after a few days of this it got worse and his doctor-on-call told us to get him to Sick Kids straight away. Fortunately, we did as he had pneumonia!

So, yes Katine, a trip to Emerg is never considered over-reacting in my opinion.

oh, and we dumped the quack and stayed with his on-call after this episode. Turned out that the pneumonia was a result of lactose intolerance as well.

RE: Stem Cell Research

I'm for it but only within ethical guidelines. Eggs that are to be disposed of - and they are routinely - by a fertility clinic can be put to good use in stem cell research rather than the alternate.

RE: Private Lives....and...Public Lives

Are you intimately familiar with Clinton's wedding vows Pucks? If not, and I assume you are not then to say that is pure speculation on your part.

RE: Moody Shoppers

Having stood directly behind people like that on many an occasion, Tracy, I can relate well! And all too often it's the poor, frazzled, clerk that will apologize to me and the other customers in line for the rude interruption.

My response is usually along the lines of telling him/her that an apology from them is not necessary for the actions of a disrespectful malcontent and wish them a warm Merry Christmas.

At least I walk away knowing that I have helped lighten and cheer that persons day and feel better myself too.

RE: Stem Cell Research

Dougie,
It is not stem cells that are being killed off - it is embryos that are being killed in order to harvest the cells. Embryos that will eventually mature into fetuses.

RE: walk on the moon

If you haven't already done it yet, AB, go out when Jupiter is in the sky and watch as a moon and/or it's shadow transits across the disc - it's a truly fascinating sight! Astronomy or Sky & Telescope have a table in each issue giving exact times of the occurrences for each of the 4 major moons.

RE: Stem Cell Research

Genesis 1:26 - And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

RE: walk on the moon

What size is your objective mirror, AB? (I'm assuming that you have a reflector)

RE: Stem Cell Research

Therapeutic cloning refers to inserting a cell nucleus into an egg where the nucleus has been removed. From this, the embryo is allowed to grow and after about 5 days the inner cell mass is transferred to a lab dish with feeder cells where they proliferate and are re-plated to new dishes. An embryonic stem cell line is generated after many months with millions of healthy cells that have not yet begun to differentiate into specialized cells.

RE: Dion's Plans

nope

RE: walk on the moon

There is no doubt a magnetic field surrounding the moon as there is around the earth however, given that the moon is a fraction of the mass of the earth, said field will be very weak. In addition, consider that spacecraft are capable of returning to land on earth with a higher field.

RE: Stem Cell Research

The only difference between an embryo, a fetus and a baby, some argue, is time - and all deserve the same protection. With that in mind, a non destructive method must be developed that will avoid any ethical or moral debate.

Research is continuing with adult stem cells that may prove more abundant and malleable than previously though. Further research is being done with therapeutic cloning where the nucleus of say a skin cell is inserted into an egg whose nucleus has been removed.

RE: Stem Cell Research

How is it any different? Regardless of it's developmental stage a fetus is still a fetus.confused

RE: Farewell to a very funny man!

He and Brad Garrett were the only two good characters in that show....he'll be missed.

RE: Jesus of Nazareth

I don't think that Rene would agree with that statement Pucks, as after reading it several times I still cannot comprehend it. Come to think of it, as it makes no sense it all it really doesn't qualify as a statement either...tongue

RE: Jesus of Nazareth

I think John, that you need to reread Gib's opening remark and also that you need to tone down your racial slurs. While you're at it, you may want to check your own meds as they seem to be wearing off this morning and your true self is shining through again. drinking

Lost Chapter in Genesis

seeing as we're talking about religion in a few threads...

Lost Chapter in Genesis

Adam was hanging around the garden of Eden feeling very lonely. So God asked him, "What's wrong with you?" Adam said he didn't have anyone to talk to.

God said that He was going to make Adam a companion and that it would be a woman.

He said, "This person will gather food for you, cook for you, and when you discover clothing, she will wash it for you.

She will always agree with every decision you make.

She will bear your children and never ask you to get up in the middle
of the night to take care of them.

She will not nag you and will always be the first to admit she was wrong when you've had a disagreement.

She will never have a headache and will freely give you love and passion whenever you need it."

Adam asked God, "What will a woman like this cost?"

God replied, "An arm and a leg."

Then Adam asked, "What can I get for a rib?"

The rest is history....
