Remember that the only reason we ever did get anything nice - the only reason we have the NHS - was due to the threat of international labour. Liberals believe that we mustn't act ourselves and we must submit to the overwhelming need to obey in the blind hope that the pity of the rich will continue to finance our public services.
But pity alone is not going to do it. We have to give wealthy society a taste of what the violent cesspool of pre-welfare society feels like. For over 30 years the rich and middling have borrowed for their own crime insurance and riot prevention(the welfare state)through debt because they won't pay the taxes which keep them safe and provide a nice society to live in. Debt allowed them to be greedy without any short-term consequences, the rich have enjoyed 30 years of civil society courtesy of the national debt, and now that the debt isn't an option guilt-tripping and begging will NOT get the rich to "pay" their share. People must turn to increasingly extreme measures to defend themselves.
One reason for the terrorism we see in the world today is the lack of a genuine left-wing terrorist movement. Come drive your trucks down the pavement of a leafy suburb in Bath, blow up ATOS HQ, burn down the stock exchange etc.
Well we have the poor living in death traps, the sick killing themselves under new welfare rules, and the neglected mentally unwell driving trucks down the pavement. I'm not surprised at all that Corbyn held the Tories to a hung parliament. When you treat people this way what can you expect except they vote communist as they did?
We're in it for the long haul. Over the coming decades we'll see either liberals making a principled attack on the muslim family championing woman, gay and individual rights, some kind of right-wing populism with a strongman and a country where nothing really works properly, or we'll see sharia law.
