A long time ago people would live through their children and that was the continuity between past and future. There was little inter-generational conflict before the fast-food culture of instant gratification and in the past the main duty of a father of a family was to look out for his own children, the main drive was to create a better life for your children. But today the opposite is the case. In the minds of many a greying baby the world will end when they end; they equate the end of themselves with the end of the world and at best there is no responsbility to anything which comes after and at worse they aim to curse everyone and everything that still has a stake in this world.
Things are at a stalemate today between the living and the kept alive. If you look into Trump politics it's all about averting catastrophe, escaping doom - avoiding death! It's the living purgatory of the elderly where death stalks you at every turn united with the forgotten and damned of the earth - that's what right-wing populism is.
