RE: Obama's Cairo Speech

War has been a human fraility since the dawn of man, Stress. As long as one group has something that another group wants there will be war. America is a vast continent and rich in it's resources. We could have been born with a silver apology in our mouths and we would still have enemies. If you think Obama can put an end to war, you are wrong. The biggest deterrent we have to war is strength and resolve. We should keep our noses out of other people's business and only intervene when asked. We should always continue to be a good and benevolent neighbor, share are strengths and lend all of our resources WHENEVER ASKED... but we should also stand firm in our commitment that if you fu** with us, we're going to land on you like a thunderbolt. To my way of thinking, there is no other solution.

RE: Obama's Cairo Speech

Perception is definitely based on where you're standing, which means your perception is equally skewed. You are an outsider looking in whereas I am living it. Perhaps you can't understand the magnitude of changes in our culture post 9/11, the cost and aggravation of Homeland Security, the businesses and lives that have been effected, the sadness of watching our country divided, or the anger that stems from having to deal with these cowards. I will add that much of my established convictions are a by-product of 9/11 and not the other way around.

With that said, I certainly do feel like our government has made monumental mistakes over the years. I've said so many times on these forums. But I still contend that Obama could have rectified some of those mistakes and accomplished the exact same goal without throwing his own country under the bus...again.

RE: Obama's Cairo Speech

I've got to run but just want to add for the record that I DOOO think it is good he is reaching out and extending all these olive branches. I just think he is making a logistical error in his approach which is unnecessary and very demoralizing to Americans....

RE: Obama's Cairo Speech

I don't think so. If you go back and listen he makes no mention at all of the dreaded "terrorism" or what we have had to do these past years to combat this problem on our own soil. I think more it is HIS perceptions that are out of line. He is a standing American President and our Commander in Chief. If he wants to just be an apologist he can get a job at the UN.

RE: Obama's Cairo Speech

Here's the rub, Stress. I think it's admirable of Obama to reach out to the Muslim nations, but it's infuriating to see him once again act almost apologetic about America's role, as if we are the ones to blame for events like 9/11. In particular, he completely minimized the significance of American troops in preserving American national security and I think that is a big mistake on two levels.

First, it's demoralizing and, frankly, unAmerican for a standing U.S. President to act ashamed of all the hard work our soldiers have committed to the war on terror in order to keep America safe from these idiots. We did not ask for Islamic extremists, suicide bombers and terrorists cells....

Freedom has not come from his rhetoric, but from the blood and sweat of our fantastic military. Our troops are literally putting their lives on the line daily in order to protect us from the terrorist's ideology of jihadism, yet Obama steadfastly refused to use either term, ‘terrorism’ or ‘jihad’, in his entire speech.

Second, it's logistically stupid. How about taking a page from Ronald Reagan and speak the blunt truth? You can still extend the same Olive Branch, but with emphasis on our sacrifice our resolve, as well. Our enemies need to see America operate from strength, as that is the true way to peace, expecially in the Middle East, where dictatorships abound. It is a culture that understands power and strength, not pleading and flowery words.

Personally, the most significant thing that came from is speech is my resolve to send over the world's largest care package. Our troops should somebody in America gives a sh##.

RE: North Korea

It will become increasingly obvious that the large deficit Obama has incurred while pursuing his cure for the recession is, on its own, causing more problems than it solves. As high interest rates and, most likely, inflation, begin to set in, with no relief in unemployment, it will be obvious that Obamanomics isn't working and is, in fact, aggravating the economic trouble.

While we cannot predict precisely the start date of the Obama-generated misery, it's pretty clear that it will be a long-lasting pain. Neither inflation nor the pain of higher taxes is going to go away soon. And either approach probably will kindle a new recession.

Some economists think we will have an L-shaped recession from which we do not emerge for years and years. Others think it will be a W-shaped recession (not Bush's W) in which we emerge briefly and then go back down again. But a U-shaped recession, in which we go down and then come bouncing back, probably cannot happen with Obama's deficits now firmly in place.

RE: When will the economy get better?

Well here's a bit of an overview...

Oh. I see. Well I still think it's worth mentioning that whatever happens from this day forward it's on Obama's watch ...

Now wait just a minute. This whole issue is in Democratic hands. This is Obama's baby and his alone...why bring your complaints to the republican doorstep???

RE: Obama Rocks! Some positive signs in american economy already!

You haven't seen your next tax bill.
doh

RE: North Korea

I totally agree with you on this one. Obama should shut up and wait until America is asked for an opinion. If anyone should be speaking out it's Northeast Asia. Let them come to us, or let the UN come to us and ask for help. Otherwise Obama should stay out of it.

RE: Obama Rocks! Some positive signs in american economy already!

Bin Laden's not buying the sweet talk either...

In an audio message aired on Al-Jazeera TV, Bin Laden proclaims: ?Obama and his administration have sown new seeds that will increase hatred and vengeance towards America,? that President Obama is ?following in the footsteps of his predecessor,? and that ?the American people should prepare to continue to reap what the leaders of the White House are sowing,? according to the latest briefing from The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).

In another audio message, al-Zawahiri states that Obama, a ?global criminal? and ?the chief of the oppressors,? did not need to come to Egypt in order to make his address to the Muslims, which is nothing but empty slogans -- because his true messages have already reached the Muslims.

Those true messages, according to al-Zawahiri, are deeply etched in the actions of the American president.

RE: Obama Rocks! Some positive signs in american economy already!

Obama, recognizing the danger, has begun to speak out recently, without even cracking a guilty smile, against the huge budget deficit he created. He is trying to blame the deficit, too, on Bush.

But voters will not overlook the huge spending sprees of January and February, when Obama quadrupled the 2009 deficit. They will come to see that spending as a huge mistake and will shift their blame to the new president who proposed it.

Obama now faces a choice of poisons.

He can leave taxes as they are and take the poison of high interest rates, rapid inflation and a new recession, all caused by the massive borrowing he has forced on the Treasury. If the Treasury cannot sell enough bonds at a reasonable interest rate, it will, of course "monetize the deficit" ? economics-speak for printing money so there will be enough to buy the Treasury debt at moderate interest rates.

But the process of expanding the money supply so vastly (or even just leaving the expansion in place without trying to soak up the extra money) will cause its own runaway inflation.

Or Obama can break his pledge and raise taxes on everybody. His soak-the-rich approach will not be enough to cover the deficit. Especially when one factors in his healthcare proposals, big tax increases on the middle class become an increasing likelihood. And when we consider his cap-and-trade legislation, huge increases in utility rates also loom.

We went over all of this last night in great detail. I'm not about to waste the pixels to repeat it.

OK. I'm all ears and will listen with an open mind.

Enlighten me.

RE: Obama Rocks! Some positive signs in american economy already!

We gave him a chance and he put us so far into debt we will never crawl out of it. You don't seem to understand that what he has already done is PERMANENT DAMAGE.

RE: Obama Rocks! Some positive signs in american economy already!

You really need a better understanding of both parties and how things have evolved over the past few decades. It's true that religion has now become more of an issue than it used to be, but I would seriously not characterize the republican party solely on this criteria. The fundamental differences between the belief system of both parties are so vast that religion is really just a blip on the radar.

RE: Obama Rocks! Some positive signs in american economy already!

Your question implies it has to be one or the other. It also implies that "history" is determined from one president to the next and not over the course of several administrations. Surely you're not THAT narrow minded????

Certainly I could find many things to criticize about the Bush era. He made mistakes but he also kept us safe. Obama, on the other hand, has already done more HARM to this country than we can possibly manage in this lifetime.

If I had to make a choice, it would be an easy one.

RE: Obama Rocks! Some positive signs in american economy already!

There's a huge difference between regulation and socialism, Juan. So far not one of Obama's "changes" has produced a solution...but EVERY ONE of them has produced additional taxes. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to see where it's going.

RE: Obama Rocks! Some positive signs in american economy already!

Exactly what I'm afraid of, Juan. Here is is again in case you didn't see it...

“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But under the name of “liberalism,” they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation without knowing how it happened.”

“I no longer need to run as a Presidential Candidate for the Socialist Party. The Democratic Party has adopted our platform.”

Was a leading American socialist, pacifist, and six-time presidential candidate for the Socialist Party of America.
