RE: One Reason Arizona Passed SB 1070

Well it's not something I'm very proud to post, but I get a little tired of misinformation and stereotypes. How can any of us have a productive discussion when half of the claims are just plaing false?

Is this a trick question?

I think it's like anything else in life: if it's important enough to you, you just find a way and enjoy the ride.

RE: Obama is going to be rememberd as one of the best american presidents!

Here's another gem from today's headlines...

"The Obama administration threatened to veto parts of its own health care bill after budget scorekeepers found that the package would add at least $115 billion more to government health care spending."

Obama has told congress to either cut $115 from something or find the money in new taxes. So soon? At least it took many years before the other programs went bankrupt.

RE: America's Non-existent Border

Totally agree. One of my biggest complaints about our government is that it never goes back and removes legislation or programs that are no longer applicable or necessary. The end result is that we have so many useless laws on the books that nobody can see the forest for the trees.
doh

RE: America's Non-existent Border

I'm guessing she means that our government, in it's infinite wisdom, has made a hash of the immigration system just like most of the programs it attempts to manage. I hear its very complicated and difficult, but I have little first-hand knowledge.

RE: America's Non-existent Border

I am not up to speed on Australia's immigration laws, but I have looked into New Zealand's... They have four basic rules: you must speak the language, you must have a health certificate/chest x-ray, you must supply a criminal background check, and you must be able to prove you can support youself and/or your family. It's perfectly, wonderfully, beautifully logical - and if America tried that we would be skewered on a hot poker for our horrible intolerance.

RE: America's Non-existent Border

I think it's very safe to say that American's as a whole are fed fu##ing up with with our government...no matter if we are a liberal, conservative, independent, or a tea bagger. That's why Arizona took matters into their own hands and some 10 other states are drafting the same legslation. It's outrageous and unfair to all of us - illegals included. This should have been handled Waaaaaaay back.

thumbs up

RE: America's Non-existent Border

This is beginning to read like a script from Father Knows Best.

But you rule, Harry. Nice to have the voice of sanity to keep us all in line on the playground.
hug

RE: America's Non-existent Border

Well yes, but we were also largely founded on indentured servitude. Lots of prisoners which, I suppose, made them doubly illegal by today's standards. laugh

I'm not sure what the best or most humane answer is for dealing with the millions of illegals already here, but if they are going to stay they need to be on the tax rolls.

RE: America's Non-existent Border

And since Harry said to be nice, I'll leave ya alone about it. But I'll leave you with these words of Teddy Roosevelt which exemplify my feelings on the subject. It was written more than 100 years ago, but perhaps all countries with this burden should consider it today.

'In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language.. And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.'

Theodore Roosevelt 1907

RE: America's Non-existent Border

You know, I've made one simple post here that was not the lest bit nasty but factual. My feelings on the subject are really not far from wsimply a statement of fact about the strain on the economy. I see no reason why you felt the need to jump down my throat, but apparently you want to get snarky even though you have admitted you know nothing of the subject.

So I'll explain it to you nice and simple. When an illegal immigrant comes over here and has a child (free at the hospital, by the way), that child is automatically an American citizen. As such, they are entitled to a whole host of government programs and incentives from with the parents, naturally benefit.

And could you please tell me what gave you the idea that I have never travelled?

RE: America's Non-existent Border

Ever heard of anchor babies? Duh! doh

RE: America's Non-existent Border

Not to mention the HUGE strain they put on the system, at least here in the states. If they are illegal and don't pay taxes, they are doing nothing to support the schools where their children attend for free, the lunch programs they get for free, the food stamps, the housing assistance, the medical care, the special language programs, and so on. It's a tremendous strain, on top of being illegal.

RE: One Reason Arizona Passed SB 1070

Yup. Just like financial regulation. There have always been laws; it's just that they choose not to enforce them.
