Well that goes back to the Roosevelt quote, and I don't think it applies to just America but all nation's fighting to retain their culture while welcoming immigrants. There has to be cultural assimilation. Otherwise, why move to a different country anyway?
I think (hope) that while crime is a very serious aspect of the problem in Arizona, the real argument is why Arizona should or should not have the right to demand to see someone's papers when they have been caught committing a crime, or pulled over for traffic violations.
I can honestly say that I believe most Americans welcome LEGAL immigrants. The problem is those who come here illegally because they place a tremendous burden on our society and our economy as a whole.
I don't think I've heard anyone object to legal immigrants yet...
I'm all for head shrinkers, butt shrinkers and anything else that makes a person happy. Personally, I'm a little squeemish about the really invasive stuff, so I don't think I would ever want to do some of it even if I really wanted to. But the little things here and there??? Sure.
And just because this deserves a second reading...
'In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language.. And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.'
That's really not anywhere near an accurate description of what's happening in Arizona. Perhaps you should read up on the subject before commenting further?
