To me, there is no strictly defined line. There are different degrees of both in people.
But in a nutshell,
being shallow is not being able feel deeply and think seriously, but being concerned with what meets the eye (the obvious at first sight/thought) only. Being selective is knowing yourself and what works for you, and being able to see, feel, appreciate, and enjoy these desirable (for you) qualities (which often lay way beyond the facade) in other people.
Selective = depth of intellect/knowledge/feelings. Shallow = lack or even absence of it.
maybe not such a bad idea for those who don't dare to face their ex-to-be? (in other words - for the cowards).
If the alternative is to just disappear with no explanation at all (which happens in life), using a 3rd party help in dealing with it at least shows some considerations. And offers some kind of closure?
