How You Know.

Pearls of wisdom are all about
But is there truth behind it?
How, you ask, do you know love?
"You'll know it when you find it".

Is that the truth, the simple core?
The heart of wisdom in this vein?
Or specious words of wisdom void
And utterly inane?

To recognize what you've not known
Because, it's said you will,
Is hard to grasp or comprehend.
Think of that what you will.

And so you've met that special one.
So different from the rest.
You want to pull a litmus strip
And put it to the test.

But you're hanging out there on your own
No litmus strips to use.
Uncertainty besets you
With the thought that you might lose.

You have to know, you tell yourself.
You must this time be sure.
For one more heartbreak is too great.
A blow you can't endure.

But maybe it can't be defined
With clarity of thought,
But only as this love is all
That other loves were not.

Perhaps "not love" is all we need
To know and judge aright.
As darkness best can be defined
as absence of the light.

When all it is is all you want
And nothing in short measure
You'll know it's love; all doubt dispelled
And you have found your treasure.

About this poem:
I spoke with my daughter over the weekend. I said I was now able to tell her something I could never tell her before. I've never repeated to her the common wisdom of love that "You'll know it when you find it" because until I met LadyBee, I had no way to know if it was true. But now I do know that it's true. Like love, itself, though... you'll only know this as truth after you've found it.

Not an Eagle

They flap their wings for all to see.
"I'm an Eagle. Look at me!".
But look again, that's not quite right.
They're not eagles high in flight.
Not too swift and not too brave
With vicious beaks that won't behave.
United in a putrid pact
They try to pull the Eagle act.
But money talks and bullshit walks
And only vultures squawk in flocks.

Time Reconsidered

Time is a concept
It never stands still
It flies and crawls.
It promises and threatens
It is our servant and master
And that's the way it's always been
But now I see time differently
And it's a painfully simple view
Perspectives of time are only two
being with you and waiting to.

You Need to Know

We're not the youngsters that we act
And our age begins to show.
We can't be young forever
Firm and tight like years ago.

Our skin will form some wrinkles
And with time, they'll grow and spread
Our eyes will blur and we will have
Less hair upon our head.

Wherever we will journey
And Wherever we will go.
No matter what's in store for us
There is something you must know.

You'll still be hot and sexy
As we both get old and gray.
Because, my love, in my eyes
You're more beautiful each day.

Missing You.

As though surfacing from a deep dive
I stir awake, consciousness rising.
As dim, gray morning light meets me
My first thoughts begin to flow.
And I begin the day thinking of you.
A sadness comes over me,
My arms empty,
My heart heavy.
I know it's another day.
Another day I won't spend holding you.
I know it's another day
Another I'll spend wishing I could.
Another day without you.
But one day closer to you.
One day closer to holding you.
One day closer to kissing you.
One day closer to touching you.
And that's my daily salve,
The ointment that soothes the pain.
The pain that comes with missing you.

Magic in the Night

Embedded image from another site

A perfect day winds down
As the sun slips into bed
Drifting into slumber with
Pastel sheets overhead.

As fading twilight starts to dim
I pull you to my side
My beating heart is pounding
I've no feelings I can hide.

My fingers stroke your silky neck
My breathing hard you hear.
In my arms I hold you tight
And draw you oh so near.

I kiss your cheek with gentle lips
That can't restrain a sigh
My fingers trail along your side
And down your hip and thigh.

I hold your head against my chest
You hear my beating heart
My eyes take in your loveliness
And thrill at such fine art.

With every touch, you feel my love
You feel a burning fire.
You know you mean the world to me
And fill me with desire.

My love extends with every touch
And warms you with each kiss.
And slowly do my lips explore
No inch of you they'll miss.

I pull you down to lie with me
You feel my breath upon your skin
My kisses wander over you
To love the soul within.

I tenderly unwrap your love
One layer at a time.
And revel at your silky skin
That feels so sublime.

You can't resist such gentle love
And so respond in kind.
As my fingers love your body
And my whispers love your mind.

The dark of night envelops us
We love by touch and feel.
And our passion rises higher yet
As your sheath accepts my steel.

Together we are merged as one
And heightened senses swoon
And leisurely we climb our mount
No rush to end it soon.

Each gentle motion, touch and kiss
Adds more fuel to our fire.
Each deep caress of me to you
Lifts both our spirits higher.

So pure and strong and sweet it is
So beautiful and right
And so we dance the dance of love
And tango through the night.

As morning comes and night departs
We're basking in the glow
And hold each other tightly
Never willing to let go.

Materializing the Dream

I've had so very many dreams
That faded in the morning light.
And a dream as real as it seems
Can only live at night.

They tell of things the heart desires
And sometimes they come to pass
But only once the mind retires
To seek sleep's greener grass.

One lover always came to me
While deep in restless sleep.
Although her face I could not see
And her hand I could not keep.

I knew her by the way she felt
As I held her to my chest.
Together merging, we would melt
Forsaking all the rest.

But morning light was harsh and cold.
And I'd waken all alone
With promises I must uphold
That turned my heart to stone.

The real world has no such dreams
For this love can't exist.
Such folly, yes, a sane mind deems.
Such folly I'd resist.

As my life began to shape and change
I took a different course
Like a rider on the open range
Set surely on his horse.

Never resting, on the move
No camp was I to make.
There was nothing more for me to prove
And nothing to forsake.

Those pockets full of pyrite
I did empty with disgust.
No need for that to travel lite
So I left it in my dust.

I knew for me the time was now
To seek what I could find.
And see if fortune would allow
A fate for me that's kind.

No room at all for compromise
No time at all for fear.
No settling for half-assed lies
I'd left them to my rear.

But could I find the love I'd sought?
The love I knew in dreams?
Life's lessons learned and also taught
Not all is what it seems.

No, giving up was not the way
And I knew I'd never rest.
And nothing more of love I'd say
Till I put it to the test.

And so I searched to find my love
And I knew I'd know her heart.
The one that I'd been dreaming of
To join and never part.

For years I tried to figure out
Just what a love should be.
And at last I know there is no doubt
My love has set me free.

I didn't know I'd find her here
There was no way to know.
But once I did it all came clear.
I'll never let her go.

Another Day

The Irish rain is falling
And the hearth fire flickers red.
Morning coffee is calling
And it draws me from the bed.

A soothing jazz is playing
While potatoes cleaned and diced.
And the morning sky is graying
While the onions then are sliced.

The skillet spits and sizzles
As ingredients go in.
Melted butter drizzles
As the breakfast does begin.

Chirizo, cut and ready
As I cube some cheddar cheese.
All turned slow and steady
Can you get the eggs out, please?

The onions start to carmelize
And potatos start to brown.
Fresh pepper now to tantalize
As I turn the burner down.

Chirizo joins the party now
And sizzles in the heat.
A minute sitting I allow
Then flip it and repeat.

Now the eggs get scrambled in.
They thicken as I mix.
I add the cheese and stir again.
The settings now I fix.

So then I start the plating
And I gently spoon it on.
For I know my Lady's waiting
And I will not keep her long.

Two strawberries I add per plate
Red and sweet and tart.
At the table, then, I join my mate
Another day to start.

It's nothing much to write about
It's just your average day
And yet I want to jump and shout.
My lady makes me feel that way.

Poets Coming Clean

Secrets aren't forever.
Though I've kept one locked away.
This day their binds I sever
For there's something I must say.

Though past words have been cryptic
And careful have they been.
I care not to be mystic
About the things I feel again.

I've written much for all to see
Though often meant for only one.
And now at last I feel free
For now what's done is done.

Some days ago I packed some things
And travelled through the night.
To her for whom my heart just sings,
A seven hour flight.

Even now we're sitting here
So near the Irish sea.
This poem I write is for my dear
The lovely LadyBee.

I'm smitten so, and now you know.
A secret kept as best I could.
But now we're basking in the glow
Of love that's strong and good.

We both agreed it's time to share
The joy we feel with you.
And say to you that if you dare
Your dreams might just come true.

Defective Armor

In childhood there came a day
That my eyes no longer cried.
And ever after come what may
No tears would ever hide.

No pain would ever wet my cheek
No sorrow stain my eye.
To cry is only for the weak
No strength do tears belie.

No loss was ever so severe
To make my eyes go red
And render even one small tear.
I'd lock them down, instead.

No hardship ever broke me down
No sadness overcame me
Too mighty was my steely frown
For tears to fall and shame me.

So now I'm at a total loss
And puzzle though I might.
This conundrum I've come across
I cannot answer right.

How can my armor now be cracked?
It never was before.
How can emotions be so stacked
That tears could hit the floor?

And how I try to understand
The genesis of how it's so,
Feelings that I can't remand
So powerful they grow.

And how can beauty do to me
What pain and loss could not.
Just how does love make tears run free
And render my defenses naught?

How could a thing that feels so right
Break down my hardened wall?
That even while I'm smiling bright
Unchecked those tears can fall?

And how can I be so unshamed
To feel so deep a touch
To swim in feelings still unnamed
And relish them so much?

In life some things I can't explain
Another now I know.
Make no mistake I won't complain.
That love now makes tears flow.

Wild Fire

No warning given, it began.
A small and feeble spark.
Tinder ignited and wind did fan.
A glowing ember in the dark.

The fields had grown both high and dry
The winds now shifted east.
And flames leaped up into the sky
And so was born the beast.

Fueled and gently stoked it burned
And nothing could impede it.
And to it's destination turned
Each breath it took did feed it.

Roaring off and heading east
Toward the rising sun.
Unstoppable by man or beast.
It cannot be undone.

Trails of smoke across the sky
Will mark it's fevered flight
And so the fire will burn and fly
Throughout the dogday's night.

When morning comes it's but begun
And it shall spread and grow
And all behind it lay in ash
That falls like winter snow.

And burn it shall, this wild fire.
Intense and hot and free.
And nothing now is there to do
But watch and let it be.

The earth it scorches cannot die
And in the char and wake.
New seeds will sprout and grow so high,
A lush new world to make.

Priceless Beauty

He cradled her neck in his hands
Nuzzling his cheek into her
Feeling her curvaceous responsiveness
Stroking slowly and sensually
Feeling how taught and fine
Tuned in to him and he to her
Together as one,
With gentle strokes he caressing her.
Vibrations of beautiful love
Emanating from her breathlessly
Alone with no one to hear
They made their music together
Her ageless beauty so fine
So rich and so priceless
To her very depth each tender movement
Drawing across her perfect strings,
created the purest notes of love.
The bow that courted her
So plain and common compared to her
And so very privileged
Just to stroke such brilliance
The fine creases on her skin
Just tributes to her value
How lucky the bow
That touches the Stradavirius,
Stroking her in the night.
