Has the West become too complacent?

Is there a growing ennui (that would be sad listless boredum for folks like Redex) among many who used to be go getters? Are too many dropping out of the job hunt after years of no luck? Too many on the dole, esp. disability? Younger generations following suit? Or horror of horrors, are immigrants the only ones with dash and elan? (reach for that dictionary, Redex).

Ah. yes. The hoilier than thou liberal Dutch.

Talk to any Indonesian older than 60 about these well intentioned finger pointers. There are good and bad everywhere. Look what the USA did to our first nations and negroes. French in Africa and Indochina, Portuguese in Angola-Mozambique and Ginnea Bissaau, Japanese all over Asia, Brits almost everywhere,---long list here, peebles. Aa.

Mess up at the US film awards....

They got it correct at first. Affirmative action hurts us all. Aa.

Mr. President Trump.

A number of the social and educational groups I attend are made up almost entirely of one note liberals, who of late like the term "progressives". Always a hoot when I ask them to define either term. I've mostly learned not to challenge the almost constant vicious Trump bashing, as it rarely leads anywhere in terms of meaningful discussion, where both parties might learn from each other. I think it's in part due to their exclusive association with their ilk, present company excepted. Yes, the Donald does have a mouth, but for decades the biased media were accustomed to having their way with pols on the right, while tossing softballs at officials typically on the left, like over 90% of them. Doubt it? Watch any intrview with the fake Indian affirmative action E. Warren, or the affirmative action BHO. He's got the biased media slugs all standing over yellow puddles. Latest stunt---not participating in the annual Presidential-press dinner. Democracies, like burocracies can, now and again, use a healthful dose of being whacked up side the head. Love it. Aa.

Matt Damon,

Narrator of the film documentary, "Inside Job". You all gotta see it. Collusion in corruption among bankers, government officials (so called "regulators") and bond/fund/bank "rating" companies. Two days before the 2008 crash, many firms were still being rated tripple A. Not a single scumf*ck went to jail. Most got huge bonuses.Millions lost their homes and life savings. Where were the pitchforks in thre streets, peebles?Aa.

Corruption.

All kinds. When a legislator and lobbiests get together to make sure some factory in the pol's district gets a military contract to make helmets, it might just be corruption. New school goes up and the contractor is related to the town manager, it might just be corruption. Computer contractor for Obamacare, whose wife is buddies with Muchelle, gets multimillion payola job, and screws it up completely, might just be you know what. But unlike in most hell hole countries, when I go in to see the school principal to see if one of my kids can get into a different class, I don't have to go there with a $100 bill. Differeent levels of what might just be corruption, no? Who's hip? Aa.

Overweight.

Staying fit and slim can be a challenge for many. Some folks have a harder time of it for medical reasons, but often many just don't put in the effort. There are changes that may make life more difficult for the overweight crowd---restrictions on airline seats, increases in costs of insurance, disadvantages in gainful employment, etc. It is possible to be obese and fit, but this is rare. Non-fit overweigt folks tend to have greater risks of chronic illness and earlier death. Thoughts on this issue? Aa.

The heart.

Ah, poets and philosophers have forever waxed clued about our tickers. The heart this and the heart that. But just how connected is the heart with our thoughts and emotions. Specifically, can one die of a "broken heart"? Aa.

Immunizations, for kids and adults.

Lots of folks fear them. Is it just misplaced fear? Conspiracy thinking? Ignorance? Not taking your psych meds? Aa.

Health care ethics.

17 year old black boy, with a widely metastasized lymphoma, progressing over almost a year. Lesions almost from head to toe, including liver, spleen and a large colon mass (couldn't approach surgically till metastases debunked via chemotherpy). Carribean Seventh Day Adventist family, extremly conservative and orthodox. Children must absolutely obey parents, and noone takes any medicine into God's temple (our body) except natural products. Back in Jamaica, a family member died on cancer chemo therapy. Painful death. Family allowed the boy naturopathic treatment, as things got worse, ending with arrival in ED close to death. Here's the kicker, folks, biopsy of lesions show over 85 % chance of 5 year survival (standard for "cure") with modern chemo therapy (kids tend to be much more treatable). Family refusing definitive treatment. Counselors, ethicists, clinicians, clergy, many others tried their best. Family resolute. What to do, all you sensitive clever bloggers? Take case to a judge to force treatment? Respect their wishes? ????? Aa.

Should government tell clinicians how to prescribe medicine?

In Maine we have a problem with addiction to opiates, both street and prescribed. Hundreds of overdose deaths occur each year, to which of course some might say good riddance. MME's are a way of settting the dosages of opiates to make equivalent their various strengths. A significant proportion of people regularly consuming 200 MME daily of such drugs will die in any given year. The legislature is proposing that no person be prescribed more than 100 MME daily. Is this good policy? Does it interfer with with the nurse/doctor-patient relationship? Aa.
