The Very Clean Teapot

Some years ago my wife and I went away for the weekend; my mother stayed at the house and minded the kids while we were away. Not long after we returned we noticed that the inside of our teapot, which was normally tea stained almost black, was now gleaming white. My mother had a tendency to be ‘helpful’ in unwanted ways and we were rather annoyed that she’d cleaned the teapot, as we quite liked it how it was. Some time later, It came out in conversation that there was more to the cleaning of the teapot than we had imagined.

When the subject came up, my mother was all too eager to describe the ingenuity she had demonstrated; her pride in which was apparent in her tone of voice. It was my mother’s practice to soak her false teeth in bleach overnight, and, seeing an opportunity to kill two birds with one stone, she cleverly used the teapot as the receptacle in which to do it. By the time we eventually heard this story we had, of course, made numerous cups of tea in that teapot and the implications were very quick to strike us both, but, to our credit, we somehow managed not to let our faces betray our true feelings about her thoughtful deed.

ha ha Harbal i do not have false teeth BUT i buy the powder to clean my tea pots and cups BUT bleach??? you tea was well cleansed then ha ha
Some things are better left unsaid laugh
enamal Biff ha ha

I have a glass teapot in a nice shape to make oolang tea in. It does stain glass as you have to leave to stand for ages, then can brew the leaves twice more, so tooty peg powder keeps the glass spotless and CHINA cups too ha ha

Hiya Molly
Hiya Red wave

I have a glass teapot too, but I tend to make tea in the mug when I'm by myself.
She used a some sort of denture cleaner, EX, but it had a similar constitution to bleach.
If we had had the slightest notion that she was going to "ruin" the teapot, we would have tactfully asked her not to, before we left, Biff.
And that's exactly why I didn't say what I was thinking when she told us, molly.
Molly the oolang tea is leaves not bag so a cup would be no good. I bought the teapot to go with soecial tea leaves, but my little teapot for pg gets well and truly stained tooth powder every month for sure ha ha AHHHH a very good rinse after aswell
That must have been difficult for you grin
You have no idea how difficult, molly.
I could probably tolerate a Darjeeling mouse, Biff.
Well, good thing you didn't know until after you'd made several pots of tea. Reminds me of when my in-laws were looking after my daughter. I came home to find a small plant arrangement that I'd had in a basket had been thrown out and my furniture rearranged. That was after several other unwanted things had been done. Rearranging my furniture was the last straw. That was the end of having them look after my daughter. I just couldn't handle coming home and feeling like my house wasn't mine.
Biff i laughed my head off Mouse tea is a new one ha ha
I'm afraid I didn't even have the consolation of knowing it was someone else's mother who done it, Imp. The teapot is long gone but the genes must be in me somewhere. uh oh

MiMiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii handshake

You'll stay for a cuppa, won't you? coffee
Come back, MiMi, you're safe with me, I still have my own teeth. grin
Har, do you think the main reason was to clean the teapot or was it just a handy receptacle for the teeth?
My late grandparents’ house is totally abandoned and in a very bad shape now. That makes MiMi very very sad crying

Few months ago, I went back there and retrieved a couple of things.

I remember this teapot. My late grandma used to make Chinese tea and would drink it throughout the day.

She would also at times, pour some hot Chinese tea into her bowl of white rice. She was a Hakka ( one of the many Chinese dialects and not to be mistaken with the Kiwi’s Haka ritual giggle ) and the Hakkas love tea in their rice.

Molly reunion
Mimi!!reunion
Mimi, would it normally be green tea your grandmother would drink?
It was both, as far as I know, but the workings of her mind didn't always conform to the same logic as mine so I can't be sure.
These are our favourite teas. We’d also normally order them when we dined in a Chinese restaurant. We’d choose only one type of tea, according to our ‘taste’ or ‘mood’ on that day grin

Good night, Molly hug
I live in a province famous for tea, Anhui, and possibly the most famous region in that province, Huangshan. Huang ? means yellow and shan ? means mountain? So yellow mountain. The most famous tea is Maofeng which I have grown to enjoy. They also grow/produce a black tea (red) which is my favourite. Qimen tea is a dark red and has an almost English breakfast tea flavour.

If anyone is interested this is an excellent article on local teas grown in Anhui.
I was too preoccupied thinking about what else she might have done while we were away to focus on the positives, Dee.

Happy Xmas to you too. wine
Well my mother did use to keep a large teapot under her bed so now you've got me wondering, epirb. uh oh
