The Labor Department reported that the consumer price index (CPI) rose 7.1% in November, down from a 7.7% gain in October and less than the 7.3% increase economists were expecting. On a monthly basis, the CPI was up just 0.1%, below estimates for a 0.3% gain.

In November, core CPI inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, was up 0.2% on a monthly basis and up 6% from a year ago. Economists had projected a 6.1% annual gain.

Food prices were up 0.5% month over month and 10.6% year over year. Energy prices fell 1.6% on a monthly basis but are still up 13.1% over the past 12 months. Shelter costs continue to rise, gaining 0.6% compared to October and 7.1% compared to November 2021.

Before 2022, CPI hadn’t gained more than 8.3% on a year-over-year basis in any month since 1982
