europe.. still divided
Some recent blogs and some comments all over CS made me remember an event from a few years ago..I was for work in freiburg germany.. I had to make a delivery there.. One of the guys working asked me where i was from.. So i answered him i was from belgium. He reacted to it as follows.. Oh so cool so you are american?.. Anyone will be able to understand my confusion .. so i said no i'm from belgium. He was so suprised that i wasn't american.. So i asked him why would he think i was american. Then he explained me... He came originally from siberia russia, during the communisme they had learned in school that their are only 2 countries in the world. Mother russia.. and america. So since i wasn't from russia i must have been american. A logical conclusion. You should have seen the suprise on his face when i explained to him their are allot of different countries in this world and that america was just a small part of this world.
The next time i had to go there i had taken a gift for him.. A worldmap.. I showed him where america was and what else is out there for him to discover. This man was embaressed for the little knowledge he had.. but he was willing to learn new things, ready to learn the truth. And it has been many years now since last time i've seen him but i'm sure he is doing allot of discovering still upon this day. I wish him the best of luck.
Unfortunatly this poor education was common in all eastern europe. And whats even worse, some still don't realise how wrong some of the things they always believed are. Some consider themself smart because they still know everything that they learned in those days or have learned from others that gotten knowledge in those times. I can understand it is hard to realise you actually sound foolish and have no idea about reality.. and offcourse their will always be others that feed your opinion because theirs is as screwed up as yours. I just hope you will someday learn the truth and find the courage to face reality.

here is another one from my country
I went to school during the period of Communism times, I studied geography, it was a book, atlas, map..big map in the class.
Leter, when I was about 16 years old, I travelled to England ( that time for lithuanians it was a hard thing, get visa etc.)I visited London, Nottingam, Derbyshire.With my high school 10th grade knowlage of english I tried to communicate in english with people there, I asked them : "have you ever heared of Lithuania ?, oh yes one proudly answeres, ofcourse I know ! I go with my bike everyday there ( and he did not mean it as a "joke"). I assumed the guy ment Leicester, he was suprised I know so much being so young.
I also remmeber one guy telling me, you russian guys are seeking asylum here so that you could get all the benefits from this country, comming with no language, I even suggest you to bring your own TV's so you could watch your russian programms.
With my poor english knowlage, I did not understand what was he talking about, I asked him, do you mean if I bring the TV with me over here, I will be able to watch the programs in my language? He answered, yes yes you silly, you will be able to watch your russian channels !
Thats the funny part Teddy.
But speaking from my point of view, Communism educated people very stricktly and a very braod at least in Lithuania and no, we did not study in russian language or read , write russian, we always used our language, our literature but the knowlage was thick and braod.
In communism times if someone did not attend the high school, they would get you from the cave and return you to studies, not like now when you can choose not to attend the school at all and noone will rise a question-why.
But perhaps not Communism should be blame but the system of education.
I know many children who immigrated to States or other countries from the schools in here, straight away jumping to a higher grades there because they have nothing to do compare to a pressure here and there.
I say, any education, any knowlage you get in life is-good.

I for one, have Master's in Bulgarian language and literature (called Bulgarian philology). I was admitted (after a hard exam) to PhD in Morphology (do you know what it is?): The Thesis was : The opposition Perfect:Non Perfect Tenses in Bulgarian.
Unfortunately, I didn t finish my thesis since my children were babies and I had to choose to be mom or to hang in the libraries all day (then there weren t much pc's). I also taught in my Alma Mater (do you know what it is?), I had classes with international students (Bulgarian language) and with Bulgarian philology students (Morphology of Bulgarian language). I was also teaching in a high school: Bulgarian language and literature.
I have experience and I have seen and read more than you can even imagine. So I face reality and you... you are just a jealous mean man...
I am waitting for Rummy to comment, we are similar age, he also went to soviet time school and independance time school in Baku.
about the mail i have send you in private .. That was an attempt to make at least some kind of peace with you but your arrogance stands in the way of accepting point of view other then your own.. I have in a friendly manner tried to make you understand why i have been talking to you the way that i have been doing these last few days. It is clear my attempts of getting peace with you will be useless and theirfor it won't happen again. I will from now on act as if you are air.. the same thing that occupies the empty space in your head where for most humans the brain is. I would appreciate you to stay away from my blogs in the future.. that would save me the time to delete your absolute ridiculous and irrelevant ideas. Best wishes
@lilly32.. I am sure their have been places where more freedom was possible in education. Like i said in the original post this was a true life event and i have met many eastern europeans who had the same level of education as this man.
