4.5 billion planets in the Milky Way

Extra-terrestrial life may be just around the corner from Earth, in astronomical terms, on one of possibly habitable 4.5 billion planets in the Milky Way, according to a new research.
Stars called red dwarfs may support planets on which life is possible. Six percent of red dwarfs in the galaxy have Earth-sized planets, which could be habitable, astronomers at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics have estimated.

Red dwarf are the most common stars in the Milky Way, which means that the closest earth like planet could be just 13 light years away, not far in space terms.
Red dwarfs are smaller, cooler and fainter than our Sun and are not visible from Earth to the naked eye.But despite their relative dimness, they make up three out of every four stars in our galaxy, a total of 75 billion.

“We thought we would have to search vast distances to find an earth-like planet. Now we realize another Earth is probably in our own backyard, waiting to be spotted,” said Courtney Dressing, an astronomer who presented the finding at a press conference Wednesday at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center in Massachusetts.

Bo,if we do simple math, then probability of life beyond earth is equal to 100%.cheers
If you're a good boy when you die you get to go visit them all angel
Foti,100% cance there is life out there, may be billions type of lives and many intelliegent too.
And we dont know yet if they r watching us or not.may be we r on the live show for them such as Big Brother shows.grin wine
boban, actually earth is about the worst possible to support life.. other planets have been found that would be even more suited to support life. So I guess the chances of life on other plantes is indeed 100% sure
teddy, disagree with u that Eart is the worst place to support life.we have so many beautiful natural places.its just us humans, make Earth worse place.

Guys!
I will not go anywhere from here!
Perish here.crying
dont worry,Foti,u and me not going anywhere.u know how much astronaut suits cost? $ 2,5 million each.dont think someone will pay for us doh laugh
Leo, I agree we have many beautifull places.. But its a fact that the condition of earth is really on the limits of what could support life. Other planets will be suited much better.. but better conditions might also prevent those beautiful places to shape itself
Thank you Boban for interesting facts of our planetary system. I love space and I can't understand why we humans can believe we are alone in this enormous Universe. That shows a lot of how many people think... If there is any other out there why not meat them in a friendly way and not in the hostile way they show us in Hollywood movies? Just my thoughts about this and I find it so fascinating I can think it over and over again...
We Are Not Alone. (from the x-files)hug teddybear peace

...the presence of life requires water...to produce carbon based beings...life from cyanide has been found at the hot air vents under the ocean...mars probably supported life as there is signs of water...but it has all evaporated...silcone life is believed to be on Ios a moon of Jupiter...we are lucky that the sun does not evaporate our atmosphere...we are in the habitable zone...but our life came from a sulphuric beginings which as the earth cooled gave us a higher oxygen content from 10% to 23% which is what we evolved from...in my humble opinion
Teddy I agree with Leo as far as we live in a very lucky position in a solar system called the goldilocks zone.

I disagree with Leos 100% as the method used to calculate ET life is The Drake Equation

If maths is boring to look at so here is a fun toy.

I hope and am on the side of the argument of the yes Campaign.thumbs up

But am also of the persuasion that it will either be far more advanced as to have little to do with us. or not advanced enough to care if we do.

Cool blog Boban thumbs up
okay, I just copy-pasted an article, can`t take all the credits for it...laugh
OK Boban Im throwing your Nobel prize in the bin sigh
Since ive already witnessed a U.F.O. id just like to inform you no money was spent on this, it was entirely free no research was needed that night it just appeared no fleecing of taxpayers was neccesary and no prizes were given.applause applause thumbs up wave
Thanks for the new information, but I still believe that we are far away from getting there uncertain
Boban that was 44 years ago maybe they were looking for Macca's and couldnt find them.laugh grin
