Nello and Patrasche

I've been told that this story is known worldwide, however its not very known in my country.. Seems japanese know more about it then most belgians do. laugh

I remember hearing the story being told once in a pub not far from nello's statue in hoboken (antwerp Belgium) I don't recall how it goes exactly but i do recall the friendship between a boy and his dog.
If'm i'm not mistaken Nello was a little boy who was raised by his grandfather, He had to work from very young age. He met a dog Patrasche that was very sick, he cared for him and patrasche recovered and they were Always side by side since then. Not sure what happened next but they would have frozen to death at the antwerp cathedral.

I just heard this story being mentioned on the radio this week and it made me wonder.. how many of you actually have heard this story before?

Never heard it before.
thats pretty much i remember about the story.. it is a legend in antwerp. But somehow the story should have become very famous in japan... from what i heard they even made a televisionshow about it there.
Ok Teddie here it is!

In the 19th century, a boy named Nello becomes an orphan at the age of two when his mother dies in the Ardennes. His grandfather Johann Daas, who lives in a small village near the city of Antwerp, takes him in.

One day, Nello and Johann Daas finds a dog who was almost beaten to death and names him Patrasche. Due to the good care of Johaan Daas, the dog recovers, and from then on, Nello and Patrasche are inseparable. Since they are very poor, Nello has to help his grandfather by selling milk. Patrasche helps Nello pull the milk into town each morning.

Nello falls in love with Aloise, the daughter of a well-off man in the village named Nicholas Cogez. Nicholas doesn't want his daughter to have a poor sweetheart. Although Nello is illiterate, he is very talented in drawing. He enters a junior drawing contest in Antwerp, hoping to win the first prize, 200 francs per year. However, the jury selects somebody else.

Afterwards, he is accused of causing a fire by Nicholas (the fire occurred on his property) and his grandfather dies. His life becomes even more desperate. Having no place to stay, Nello goes to the cathedral of Antwerp (see Rubens' The Elevation of the Cross), but he doesn't have enough money to enter.[clarification needed] On the night of Christmas Eve, he and Patrasche go to Antwerp and, by chance, find the door to the church open. The next morning, the boy and his dog are found frozen to death in front of the triptych.

None of the film versions use the novel's ending, preferring to substitute a more optimistic one. In one of the film versions, Nello and his dog go the village church. The pastor, finding them there, covers them with a woolen blanket, thus saving their lives. Two days later, one of the judges comes, and because he thought Nello was the true winner, he asks him to stay with him. As years pass, Patrasche dies, and Nello becomes a famous artist.

I've been here in Japan for some 20 yrs. But never heard of it too. One thing I don't have a TV. Buying one would be too much for the budget as I've got to pay dues once in every 2 months beside from raise in electricity. This computer is the only luxury that I can't do without. Nevertheless, that could be true knowing that the Japanese have inclination to pets. Thanks for sharing.bouquet
ted Thanks for the story.
Embedded image from another site
well i searched on youtube and seems like a lot of the story can be found their.. i found anime, cartoons, translations in tagalog, japanese.. and something that looks like clips out of an american movie...

for those that wanna watch...

Very touchingcrying i read lots of stories about dogs devotion in my childhood, and they trully seem to be capable of love, kind of love, that people aint capable of.
Btw. patrasche isnt a nice name for a dog tho, in translation from my native it means - a ripperlaugh , i'd prefer to keep away from a dog with such a name.
i havent known about this story yet but i know another one. its also famous story of a faithful dog named Hachiko. the real story happened in Japanese. u can google urself the movie too. its so deversing to watch.
Jenny
