Calli,
Yes Having rocks for brains is an Impossibility laugh wine

Boban,
Pleading ignorance is a privilege for the rich scold laugh
Non,cheers live to fight another day.. but what we need to end is apathy.
indeed, Bogart apathy the root of the brute laugh
Hi nonsmoker: It all depends on who is giving the orders; dunno
iFreee,
perhaps handshake
Can you give me an example. dunno
I believe it has to do with values; what we believe and stand for- not what we like. Some orders are not an excuse for acts we commit/do. I am not known for following all “orders”.
yes I think you did,
But no matter who you believe is giving the order, if it does not sit right with you and you carry it out. Isn't that a type of ignorance. As in you Lack of knowledge or information to understand your opinion is just as valid as the issuers wave
I am confused about the angle you are coming from, Non. In War, we always believe the opposing side are brutes... however that is how they see us. I know that German soldiers for instance, were shot if they did not carry out orders. There is a chain reaction there... they have families to feed.

So, what are you referring to?
Non i like this blog so many twists i wish you can repost when others are awake. cheers thumbs up wave
Abagail,

There is no Angle. Its a Question dunno
Be it war or Civil matters I am referring to a simple statement.
"I was only carrying out orders"
In what Situation would a soldier Not carry out orders would it be one were he was denying brutish behavior. Did the fact that he would have been shot change the nature of his actions. dunno
Waf,
Feel free to d so,
I fell asleep and didnt get to keep it going. sigh thumbs up handshake
june,
I tend to agree,
But it cant be so cut and dry or can it. ?
No. The action has not changed.

So, would you , in that case, choose to be shot, rather than follow directions and make it home to see your family again?
To me its a bit of both but there are so many ways to look at it. Abigail i dont agree because your in a war you think you side is right no way they could brainwash me like that.wave
Waf,
Is the statement ever used in conjunction with free thinking People ? dunno
I think Non, that we have to learn to live with our decisions. Hindsight might be a beautiful thing, but it is called such for a reason. I am not sure there is a right or wrong answer...just a hovering question.

I re-read your comment several times, Non...

"Life being the motivator of the actions."

We do what is necessary to survive. Your comment rings true.
Abigail well it is brainwashing if its wrong young people are easier to control like that as you age you change opinions on certain things that the powerful have tried to have you believe. Ive had to rush as im in the middle of cooking here guys.
Okay the latest example was G.W.B. Abigail, the world council told him not to go to Iraq but he went any way that makes him a war criminal, the troops young guys did what they were trained to do --as they were told! That doesnt mean they all believed they should be there.
Waf... it's subjective, is it not?

To define brainwashing (taken from dictionary.com)-

1. a method for systematically changing attitudes or altering beliefs, originated in totalitarian countries, especially through the use of torture, drugs, or psychological-stress techniques.

2. any method of controlled systematic indoctrination, especially one based on repetition or confusion: brainwashing by TV commercials.

3. an instance of subjecting or being subjected to such techniques: efforts to halt the brainwashing of captive audiences.

Do you truly believe that defending ones nation can be considered brainwashing?

As for changing ones opinions as one ages... that is experience, wisdom... Sadly youth does not come armed with those pre-requisites , so they learn as they go.
Abigail i dont think theres any need to look up brainwashing in a dictionary surely were not all dumb here. The point is if i hold the gun you can be persuaded to my way of thinking pretty quick.laugh
You might be surprised with me, Waf... I might prefer to take the bullet.
Yes you might Abigail but thats waiting to see what happens your not saying this and sticking too it like June is.
Waf, did you just accuse me of not being consistent?

I believe the point I am making is to question an individuals choices in life, is to stand as judge, jury and executioner. It's not always as clear cut as one might think.
I never said it was Abigail as a matter of fact i said its a bit of both for "me". Now your getting defensive whats that about, i merely pointed out June is black and white what she thinks about it im a bit each way and your waiting to see what happens. And im cooking here trying to keep up.
I am not being defensive. If I were, I would be emotive, clearly that is not the case. I had a similar conversation in the office of a business man a week ago, he said, " Some people live in with world with everything being black and white, but as you and I know... there is a lot of grey."

As for cooking... I am certainly not sitting consistently at the computer. I thought some cool air might be nice, so I walked a couple of blocks to mail a letter before returning. Naively I thought the walk would be beneficial... clearly I should have followed the doctors advice. However, once we have chosen an action, it's very hard to undo it.
Hours on a bus in Ireland, Non? My goodness, wouldn't that mean you are crossing from one side to the other and back again?grin
"Man does not have the right to develop his own mind. This kind of liberal orientation has great appeal. We must electrically control the brain. Some day armies and generals will be controlled by electric stimulation of the brain."
* Dr. Jose Delgado *
Interesting choice of quote, Boban.. The author of Physical Control of the Mind: Toward a Psychocivilized Society. He was well known for his controversial research.
Dilemma dunno
Hi nonsmoker: Please allow me to expand on my thoughts. A child should be taught to be obedient. This is for their own safety. However, grownups should carry our orders conditionally.

There is a famous experiment called the "prisoner experiment" (i am sure a copy is available online). The majority of volunteers in experiments are willing to inflict severe pain or death on other human beings when a scientist tells them to do so for the good of science. Had the scientist told the participants to cut off their little fingers, I bet they wouldn't have done it. But they were willing to do far worse to someone else.

Most suffering in the world is not created by independent individuals, but by large numbers of people obeying when they should be resisting.
