Maybe there's something in the dog food that makes him itch.

I would take him to the vet to find out what is making him itch.
Link to an article about a guy who's managed to escape animal cruelty charges for pouring used engine oil onto his dog doh

My dog is part boxer and part Australian Shepherd. From time to time, usually when winter begins, he gets "hot spots", usually on his back, just above his tail, and he scratches like crazy. I give him a Benedryl tablet in the morning and in the evening. It stops him from scratching and gives the "hot spot" time to heal. Usually takes about a week or so.
Benadryl great advice used motor oil bad try tar shampoo its medicated shampoo also dove soap for dry skin just like us. Hope gets better.
@ Shell - Don't ever give your dog milk or any other dairy product, it will elevate their blood temp and cause 'hot spots' which they will start to scratch.....

That's why we are suposed to eat ice-cream in winter and ice- water pops in summer..... professor
Stop the guessing games. Take the dog to a vet for a diagnosis. Might not be allergies but rather a serious skin condition. The vet will advise you on what to feed, what to use for baths and prescribe any necessary medications.
How about going to the vet and make some blood examples? Otherwise dogs scratch as well, when they are bored.
Hi Shell
This is because his tail was not cut off when he was a pup. Alternatively it was cut off at the wrong place. The correct place to cut the tail of this particular mixed breed is just behind the ears. That should stop the itch permanently.

Try these links. They may be of help

DON'T use shampoo intended for humans on your dog!!!! their skin is very different then ours and you could damage it by doing so.

Take your dog to the vet instead of experimenting on it.
Could be your dog has a yeast problem.

Don't play a guessing game and try all these things as you may make him worse.

Take him to the vet!
