An Uplifting Magpie Story

Abandoned Magpie Roams Free but Always Returns to Family that Rescued Her

It was a cold and windy day when Cameron Bloom’s son Noah spotted her, a 3-week old Magpie that had fallen out of her nest and been abandoned by her mother. “She barely had any feathers … and she was close to dying,” Bloom recalls.
The Sydney-based family took her to their local vet where they were told it was possible to raise the chick but that magpies required a lot of time and care and needed to be fed regularly and often.
The family of five (three boys) were up for the challenge and nursed the abandoned magpie back to health. They named her Penguin and they made her a nest in one of the trees in their backyard. She comes and goes as she pleases but she always seems to come back to the family that rescued her.
Bloom, who is a professional photographer, has been documenting the relationship between Penguin and his family on the wildly popular Instagram account @penguinthemagpie, which now boasts over 68,000 followers. Be sure to check out the incredible feed that already features nearly 100 beautiful portraits of Penguin and the Bloom family.

And glad that you have great week end..

My week end... Was just abt nothing.
Only one good news I got that my boss got fired.
Whoever coined the phrase bird brain never owned one as a pet. Many of them are both intelligent and affectionate. Nice pics.

Hello Dreamcatcherhug hug , A Big Thank You to you for sharing such a heart warming story. yay yay yay
Mimi/Dream....thanks for posting this..isn't it amazing? I have lived in area of USA that has the magpies and this one is different from its North American cousins...especially the body seems larger and the tail shorter.Have always liked them and their antics. I too have had birds that I have found and raised to adult and even had one that I turned loose but it came back to stay..any bird is so much more intelligent and affectionate than we truly know...its a real privilege to be able to observe and learn about them when raising one or living with a treasured pet. Then we begin true understanding of them, their intelligence and the way they can bond with us...I had a ring-neck dove for over 20 years...was an experience that opened doors of understanding for me and was a wonderful education. The natural world and its animals are so much a part of us..thumbs up conversing
Wow DeeCee.. wow
I enjoyed what I saw.. what a lovely scene. Thanks for sharing. hug
What a great story about "Penguin" Mimi.

Thanks for sharing....loved the pics too.

Have to confess, though....haven't always had a terrific relationship with magpies.

I used to do a bike circuit(pre-children)...about 11kms....magpies are renown for being ferociously protective of their young when nesting....on this one occasion, I can recall a whooshing sound and then being struck on the top of my head....the magpie had swooped down from the trees I was passing and clawed the top of my head...which incidentally drew blood. I was very cautious of them after that wee incident.

I also recall being in a rural farm-house with my new-born daughter which had lots of windows. I often would be woken with the noise of the magpies in the morning, hitting the windows at great speed....spying their reflection, I suspect, warding off other birds.

...but I do like your story, nonetheless....laugh

...and hope you've enjoyed your child-free time. hug
Thank you everyone for your comments and lovely stories kiss kiss kiss
