Gun Control & Syrian Refugees - European Style...

Recent News Items...
President Obama has said he wants the U.S. to take in 10,000+ Syrian refugees in 2016.
Hillary Clinton has said she supports U.S. gun control laws similar to those of Australia/Western Europe.

Gun Control & Syrian Refugees...
Soooo........Europe?.......How's that workin' out for ya?!

More News Items...
In response to the influx of Syrian refugees, Europeans are rushing to arm themselves like never before.

In Austria - where gun control laws are among the least restrictive - it is now almost impossible to buy a gun. They've been cleaned out. Quite likely, many will be re-sold in more restrictive countries - at black market prices.

European women are buying a substantial proportion of the firearms.

Some Belgians are now calling for repeal of restrictive gun laws.

* YouTube - We must be mad to risk allowing Jihadists on our soil, UK MEP Nigel Farage *

He warns UK may withdraw, if migration to Europe continues uncontrolled.

cowboy
I hope the new liberal government of Canada accepts one billion middle eastern refugees.
We ve already taken in enough people from your country.
doh

dunno
Sorry, y'all.
That worked better, but still not quite right. mumbling
The Google Search thing seems to have an aversion to the word "Jihadist".
The MEP really did say it...And it really is on YouTube...
You'll just have to find it for yourselves.

Mic, I suggest that maybe Google search has a thing about Nigel Farage laugh the reason he's an MEP (member European parliament) rather than an MP is that he can't get voted in as few take him seriously, he is however quite good at reminding the European parliament that it costs too much & makes too many stupid laws imo professor
Your comment - "Gun Control & Syrian Refugees...

My reply - USA gun laws & 9\11, how'd that work out for ya dunno
What's this?
Someone is thinking about commenting, "But what 'bout Concealed Carry permit holders/armed pilots taking over the plane?"

Since 2007, CC permit holders have perpetrated 29 mass shootings, involving three or more victims.
That represents .0002266% of the 12.8 million CC permit holders.
On balance, the deterrent to potential skyjackers would seem to outweigh the risk.

The threat of an armed pilot taking control of the plane is actually rather silly.
He's the pilot. He HAS control of the airplane. roll eyes

I trust that addresses the concerns in the comments you two were thinking of posting.

cowboy
Yeah, yeah...I know what you're thinking...
"But, mic, should we be willing to accept even that miniscule chance of a CC permit holder shooting up an airplane...just to deter skyjackers?"

Thank you for thinking about bringing up that comment.

Of course not!
Again, it goes back to deterrence. Should a CC permit holder consider shooting up a plane, he'd be deterred from doing...knowing several more CC armed passengers/crew would stop him. sad flower violin

I presume that's why people who commit mass shootings in public places select public places posted "Gun Free Zones"...virtually exclusively.
When's the last time you heard of a mass shooting at, let us say, a gun show?
or a gun shop? Or a shooting range?
These people might be crazy...but they're not STUPID!!!

Keep those thinking those comments, y'all.

I'll post 'em for you; you don't even have to type them up.
Very considerate of me, is it not!
Yep. I believe in using my powers for the benefit of others! innocent
I hate this because it is a truth. Guns used to be perfectly legal to carry on airliners. What stopped it one day was an airline luggage handler who was being fired. He knew the dismissal was coming so he decided his life was over and he would hurt the airline too. Like a certain suicidal pilot he decided that while standing in line at the Pearly Gates he should not stand alone. So he bought a ticket at the employee discount rate and with his .44 magnum pistol strapped to his side he got onboard. When the plane was aloft he walked to the front of the plane and executed the pilot, the co-pilot and the navigator (a 3rd pilot many planes used to carry in the days before Loran and GPS). Down went the airplane, and when the autopsy showed what happened, up came the new law prohibiting wearing a gun onto the airplane.

Life is dangerous and scary. That is an intentional part of the program. I am very sure God and the Angels all watch the Walking Dead episodes and wish they had thought of it first. Perhaps on another canvas someday. Meanwhile they watch us and laugh.
You may be relating news items but I can say in all my 63 years the subject of relaxing gun laws in Europe has never come up in a conversation, anywhere professor Whilst it's up to you in the States to decide if guns can be carried on aircraft over there, it ain't going to happen here doh I reckon nobody here would travel on an aircraft where passengers were allowed to carry guns dunno

I'm still trying to work out your blog title confused what has gun control & Syrian refugees got to do with one another dunno
Referring to Z's question of U.S. gun laws relative to 9-11, and the disgruntled airline employee incident related by Ken...

Following the shooting incident, laws forbade firearms on airliners.

Forward to Sept. 11, 2001...
If, after the shooting incident, laws had instead provided for armed air marshals and/or flight crew...would it have even been THINKABLE that four or five persons with box cutters could skyjack just one flight, let alone successfully take control of four planes?
And, if unthinkable, would the events of 9-11 have been deterred?

Again, history does not reveal it's options.

cowboy
They relate in as much as U.S. politicians are proposing to move the U.S. in the direction of Europe on both issues.
And events in Europe suggest it hasn't worked very well.

cowboy
Perhaps relaxed gun control has not been brought up in Europe during the past six decades.
Recent events suggest that now that at least some Europeans perceive a threat, the subject is being brought up. Brought up, and acted upon.

Europe may be showing itself to be something less than the idyllic happy place some U.S. pols have been claiming it to be.

Whatever else, it will be interesting to watch this turn of events and, apparently, attitudes.

cowboy
Frankly I expect the presence of 'illegal' guns to outrace the changes in European laws. Charlie and the train incident prove the larger illegal weapons are leaking into Europe in spite of the many (useless) laws to prevent that.

We, in the US, see the same thing happening in Puerto Rico where the 8 speedboats of the US Customs and the Border Patrol are kept busy trying to interdict the guns and drugs flowing into the island. With only 5 or 6 small boats to patrol the whole coast of an island 135 miles long and 35 miles long, broken out over a 24 hour day, much slips by in thousands of small boats coming and going. The result is a growing push to legislation to legalize defensive weapons on that island. With land borders and the focus being on counting refugees I would imagine a great deal of all kinds of merchandise is sliding by in trucks and cars determined to not have hitchhikers. How soon public awareness of the reality will raise has yet to be determined.
