Deuteronomy 27-34: Covenant Blessings and Curses
After going through the laws, Moses offers a final challenge to Israel that they should listen to and love their God (Deuteronomy 27-30
He issues a warning and ultimatum. If Israel listens to and obeys their God, things will go well and divine blessing will abound. If they don’t listen and instead rebel, they will suffer from famine, plague, devastation, and ultimately exile from the land.
Moses then forces a decision: “Today I set before you life or death, blessing or curse, goodness or evil ... So choose life, by loving the Lord your God and listening to him” (Deuteronomy 30:15-20 Choose Life
See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, and death and adversity; 16in that I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His judgments, that you may live and multiply, and that the Lord your God may bless you in the land where you are entering to possess it. 17But if your heart turns away and you will not obey, but are drawn away and worship other gods and serve them, 18I declare to you today that you shall surely perish. You will not prolong your days in the land where you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess it. 19I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants, 20by loving the Lord your God, by obeying His voice, and by holding fast to Him; for this is your life and the length of your days, that you may live in the land which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them.”
Now, Moses hasn’t somehow forgotten the last forty years with these people. He’s not optimistic about Israel’s future, and so he continues with this: “I know that after I die, you’re going to rebel, turn away from God, and end up in exile.” It’s clear he doesn’t have high hopes, at least not for the people’s ability to obey.
However, all is not lost because Moses also says that when Israel finds themselves sitting in exile, at any point they can turn back to their God. And in response, God will, in Moses’ words, “circumcise your hearts, so that you may love him with your heart and soul and live” (Deuteronomy 30:6
This vivid metaphor is saying that something is fundamentally wrong with Israel’s heart; it’s stubborn and hard—the same thing that’s wrong with all humanity. Going all the way back to humanity’s rebellion in the garden, Israel has also seized autonomy to define good and evil for themselves. Along with all humanity, they’ve ruined themselves and God’s good world, but that’s not the end of the story. Moses says that he knows that one day God is going to do something to transform the hearts of his people, so that they can actually listen to and love God from the heart and discover true life. This is the promise of the new heart, picked up by later biblical prophets Jeremiah 31Ezekiel 36

Deuteronomy 33 And having made his point, Moses walks up onto a mountain and passes away.
Surprisingly, this is where the Torah draws to a close. Moses’ story has ended, but the biblical story is just starting. All the major plot tensions generated in the Torah are left totally unresolved.

Deuteronomy 12-26: Laws on Worship, Leadership, and Civil Life
After Moses’ passionate sermons, we come next to the large collection of laws in the center of the book of Deuteronomy, which are roughly arranged by topic. The opening section is about Israel’s worship of their God (Deuteronomy 12-16a
). Israel was to have one central temple where the one true God is worshiped. God was also to be worshiped through Israel’s care of its poor. For example, all Israelites were to set aside one-tenth of their income to be given to the temple and another one-tenth, set aside every three years, to give to the poor. Many of these laws put Israel on the cutting edge of justice in comparison to their ancient neighbors, which was all part of their worship of God.
The following section outlines the character qualities of Israel’s leaders (Deuteronomy 16)
Elders, priests, and kings were all placed under the authority of the covenant laws, which God would enforce by sending prophets to keep them accountable. In contrast to Israel’s neighbors, who thought of their kings as divine and a law unto themselves, Israel’s leaders were all subordinate to the law as well as the prophets.
Next, there are laws about Israel’s civil life (Deuteronomy 19-26)
They cover issues of marriage and family, business and the legal system, and community justice. Specifically, the difficult circumstances of widows, orphans, and immigrants are highlighted. Israel is to take extra care and make sure these people are supported in their towns. Finally, this section concludes with more laws about Israel’s worship.
Now, here are some tips for reading all these laws. Remember, these are the terms of the covenant between God and ancient Israel, which was a very different culture from our own. In other words, it’s not going to be helpful to compare them with modern laws from a different time and culture. These laws were given to set Israel apart from their neighbors. When you compare biblical laws with those of Israel’s neighbors in Babylon or Assyria, rules that at first seem bizarre or harsh become more clear. You can see God pushing Israel to a higher level of justice than was ever known before. Finally, try to discern what core principle of wisdom or justice underlies a particular law, and you’ll discover some really profound things. Like God said at Mount Sinai, they will become “a kingdom of priests,” and Moses explains how. Israel has the chance to show the world the “wisdom and justice of God” (

“See, I have taught you statutes and judgments just as the Lord my God commanded me, that you should do thus in the land where you are entering to possess it. 6So keep and do them, for that is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who will hear all these statutes and say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’ 7For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as is the Lord our God whenever we call on Him? 8Or what great nation is there that has statutes and judgments as righteous as this whole law which I am setting before you today?
The other key idea of shema is that Israel was called to obey and to be devoted to “the Lord alone.” In Hebrew, it says literally that “the Lord is one.” In context, the point is that the Lord is the only God Israel is to worship and follow, and they are not to represent him with any physical image.
Israel is about to enter the land of Canaan, where people worship idol gods that represent various aspects of creation, such as the sun, weather, sex, and war. In Moses’ view, the worship of these gods degrades people and destroys communities, but obeying the God of Israel, the gracious creator God who redeemed them from slavery, will lead to life and blessing.

Despite this amazing start, the Israelites struggled in their journey through the wilderness, and the entire Exodus generation was disqualified from entering into the promised land. Deuteronomy begins with Moses standing in front of the new generation, and his job is to explain the significance of the laws of the Torah

Religions have existed for thousands of years, when people searched for answers to the meaning of life.
They can be likened to the, 'Chinese whisper,' which illustrates the unreliability of hearsay.
How many religions have been created in recent times? None. Why, because most people have become intelligent and search for scientific evidence of our existence, or realise that we control our own destiny and cannot rely on any deity.

Why do you need a religion to tell you to be nice to each other? If you're choosing to be nice in order to get a reward, which religion offers, then the nice attitude is surely false. If the reward is everlasting life in some fantasy world, which again is a religious promise, then to behave in the required manner in order to achieve that, is again a false way of life.

The damage is mass-production and the truly evil things that happen behind our favourite food-stuffs. Hundreds of pigs in small cages hosed down twice a day from overhead pipes, measured food at the press of a button, ready for slaughter when the cage can no longer confine them. Beef cows chained in circles around a central feeder. Dairy cows stepping on their own vastly-inflated udders, which drag on the ground. Battery hens living under lights which create shorter days so they lay more often. Crops growing in chemical dust because the ground beneath is long since exhausted.
I have no idea how to solve the needs of a vast international population without doing all this earth-killing stuff

What does fascination with politics achieve? It provides no help to individuals, but leads them to a false hope of better things to come, so long as they adhere to the specific doctrines. Conflict in different beliefs creates wars and bitterness. It is used as a tool to control people and inflict punishment if rules not obeyed.

What does religion achieve? It provides no help to individuals, but leads them to a false hope of better things to come, so long as they adhere to the specific doctrines. Conflict in different beliefs creates wars and bitterness. It is used as a tool to control people and inflict punishment if rules not obeyed.

If religion was not important for those who need or want it they wouldn't be practicing it.

As it does for the rest of the Pentateuch, universal Jewish and Christian tradition attributes the authorship of the book of Numbers to Moses. Moses is the central figure within the book, and in at least two instances Numbers mentions him recording events by the Lord’s commands (Numbers 33:2; 36:13).
The name “Numbers” is a translation of Arithmoi, from the Septuagint, titled thus because the book contains many statistics, population counts, tribal and priestly figures, and other numerical data. The Hebrew name comes from the first sentence of the book and means “in the desert of ”; it is perhaps an even more accurate description of the book’s content, which follows the Israelites through almost forty years of wandering in the desert.1
Where are we?
The events of the book began in the second year after the Israelites departed Egypt, as they camped at Mount Sinai around 1444 BC (Numbers 1:1). The narrative ends thirty-eight years later “in the plains of Moab by the Jordan opposite Jericho” (36:13) in 1406 BC. Numbers records the people’s long wandering in the desert of Sinai, their time at the oasis of Kadesh-barnea, and their eventual arrival at the banks of the Jordan River across from the Promised Land.
The Lord directed the message of Numbers toward the younger generation, children of the former slaves who escaped through the Red Sea. Except for Joshua, Caleb, and Moses, the older generation—everyone twenty years old or older at the time of the first census—died before the completion of Numbers, due to their disobedience and disbelief (Numbers 14:22–30). Moses completed the book before his death (Deuteronomy 31:24).
Why is Numbers so important?
Numbers takes the reader on a long and winding path through a desert of excruciating detail. The book records census results for all twelve tribes not once, but twice; it documents priestly instructions for handling the Ark of the Covenant and the tabernacle; and it even spells out the placement of the tribes when they camped. But through it all, we cannot doubt God’s unfailing direction over the nation.
As a history of the nation not yet established in the land promised them long ago, this book unveils significant events sometimes referenced later in Scripture. Joshua and Caleb alone among the twelve spies encouraged Israel to take possession of the land (Numbers 13–14; Joshua 14:7); Moses struck a rock and water spouted forth (Numbers 20:11; Psalm 106:32); Moses lifted up a bronze serpent on a pole so that believing Israelites might be healed of their snake bites (Numbers 21:6–9; John 3:14); and Balaam was rebuked by his donkey (Numbers 22:21–34; Revelation 2:14).
