Feeling safe

Every weekday morn the politician I mentioned before stood at the entrance of the train station. He's welcoming the newly arrived and bidding goodbye to the departing ones. Very unique since I haven't been aware of similar acts in all of my more than 20 yrs of life here in Japan. More so because he has nobody around him in terms of personal assistants or bodyguards. In my home country any politician even one in the lowest rung has to have some sort of bodyguards. Just one of the amazing things I find here in Japan. And I shld not forget to mention that he's a looker too though quite chubby. At times I saw him exchanging opinions with the locals in different age brackets and gender. Simply amazing Japan!bouquet

Why Bother With Laws?

Politicians can break the law; high ranking military officers can break the law, civil servants can break the law, and God only knows how many private citizens not only break the law but do it repeatedly so it begs the question; if nobody is going to obey the laws and are going to go unpunished or only given a slap on the wrists, why bother with any law? And what about our kids? How are we expected to instill the idea of right & wrong or the importance of respecting those that attempt to enforce the laws when we see those very same people breaking those very same laws?!?!

Any law is only as strong as it’s enforcement against those that break it and it can only have real meaning when it is strongly enforced against those that knowingly and wantingly break it. We have categories of how badly a law is broken just like we have different levels of kinds of murder, yet there seems to be some kind of “get out of jail free” card that certain members of our society are able to present and walk away, nearly unscathed while the common man or woman often get the book thrown at them. If indeed “all men are created equal” then why aren’t all laws enforced equally?

Granted, judges and police officers are granted a certainly degree of “discretion”. That is to say that they are allowed to use their own judgement, based upon what they have learned, to alter the decision of whether to arrest, charge, and prosecute as well as in sentencing of prospective law breakers. Is that right? Should they have such an allowance? Over time we have seen plenty of examples of where good judgement can equal good justice, but it isn’t always rendered equally. Some inequalities are based on race, economic disadvantaged, and many other similar practices that smack of some form of discrimination. Sadly, there are probably as many opinions on this as there are examples.

In the past the penalties for law breakers were often based upon both the seriousness of the crime as well as the position of the law breaker. That is to say, the greater your level of responsibility, notoriety, and recognition in society, the harder you could expect to be treated. It was based upon the idea that those people were our hero’s, the folks we pointed to as an example of how our children should strive to be like. Now, it is so hard to find a genuine hero that doesn’t have feet of clay that we should be doubly putative for letting us down.

We wrestle with the differences of right & wrong, truth or fiction, making money or being moral, and so many other apparent challenges. Can’t we find a better way to reward those that are exemplary? To make it so rewarding for doing the right thing that few, if any, will bother trying to cut corners and do the wrong thing. Sadly, I am afraid that ship has sailed and it could be a very long time before we have such an opportunity to gain a foothold, especially in times where greed, fortune, and wealth seem to be paramount in every young persons mind.

It’s simple. It all starts with having a respect for the law and that only occurs when laws are equally enforced across the board; no exceptions. You break the law, you pay the price. Once we have rebuilt a healthy respect for the law, those that keep the law will be more highly revered by our peers as well as our leaders. Our children are great imitators and when they see us abiding by the law, the too will fall in line.

My Best Friend

My mother always said that I was not to play with every Tom, Díck, and Harry, but somehow I always had those names in my circle of friends. But Díck was (and still is) an exceptional good friend. I was not allowed to play with him when I was a child but I must admit to playing with him sometimes when my mother was not around.blushing

He’s been around since my first memories. We had our ups and downs, and have been through thick and thin together. He has such good manners, standing up for the ladies, which he sometimes does out of time and can be quite embarrassing. One good thing about him is that he never had time for azzholes and has never been seen hanging around with them.devil

He’s quite a naughty character and has been inside more often than what I care to remember. He really seems to like it there. Unlike normal criminals, he does not try to stay outside and has never made an effort to escape whilst inside. He serves his time and refuses to take early parole for good behavior. When he comes out, he behaves for a while, but before you know, he’s back inside again. A sucker for punishment, if you ask me.doh

Some women expect their boyfriends to cast off their old friends but I never had that problem with Díck. The women in my life did not mind him at all; in fact, some were very fond of him and I suspect one or two liked him better than me.giggle

So I Was Offered An Opportunity but...

Well it was along weekend. My desire to branch out and work independant of corporate america to a certain degree has arrived, I think. I answered an add for an outside sales rep, a canvasser if you will. And so I drove up to the cities and met the guy behind the call. And I was less than impressed but, the opportunity can be rewarding if one markets it in the right way and in finding the clients.

I guess looking at it I'm trying to seek some controls and protections for my customers. Now a days owners of small busnesses are looking out for themselves. And thou people/buyers do as well, if they don't have the info, they can get shafted pretty bad. And I don't want to be party of a business that does that to others for a buck or for any reason.

Mornings just a few hours away and Ill call them back up and feel them out. If it isn't what they advertised then I will be gonen and seeking out the competition and see if they have an opening and better terms, and more scrupples.

Its a great opportunity, if every one has a moral compass to guide them and not just slam a unsuspecting customer into a 2year agreement. I think the markets work netter for the consumer when people are freer to do business with a company monthly with no contracts. Contracts are so one sided.

I suppose contracts reduce customer churn and expensive turn over and restocking of equipment and all. Yes I am working for myself but it has to be a mutually satisfying agreement. And meeting of my ethics and value base as well.

Tomorrows a new day...

A House On An Island

Ever since I was a child, I wanted to live on an island, but if I must believe all these rumors about global warming, all islands will soon be joining Atlantis at the bottom of the ocean. Maybe I should buy a house on a hill next to the coastline. If those guys are right, I shall be on an island soon enough.idea

But I will require a sort of a time frame; there will be no point in dieing the day after my hill became an island. There are so many things to consider. I will want to build a jetty at the right spot for when the water finally arrives. Who knows, I may win the lotto before then and may need a place to park my yacht.grin

And maybe a bridge to connect my island to the mainland. It will be much easier to build it before the water arrives, but I will need to know the eventual level of the sea. It is ok if the people laugh at me. I read about a fellow who build a massive boat on dry ground, very far from any significant body of water. The people laughed at him, but his boat sailed.wow

I wonder how the rising oceans will affect the climate. I want to live on a tropical island, not an arctic wasteland. Eish, so many ifs and buts, maybe I must scrap the whole idea.roll eyes

Ambition and dreams... good or bad...

There are many people who stay in small houses driving small cars and they are happy and psychological well (latter refer to having meaningful relationships and no physical illnesses or medication). If you ask them what they aspire to or what their dreams are... the answer would be limited and they will start by stating they are happy...with who they are and what they have....

In the whole sales industry (doesn't matter the product or item), the perception is created more and better the whole time... one has to stand out from the crowd, drive a fancy car, stay in the upper neighbourhood and be on a certain level in your career at a certain time. The irony is just when you get all of these...it also doesn't last long...soon there will be a bigger house or newer car which become the 'in' criteria...

From a motivational point of view we all want to belief we can all get rich and famous... We just need to work hard, have self belief and just do it... or that is what the billion dollars motivational industry wants us to belief... but is it true? What is the percentage of people doing the right things who really becomes the one to stand out and being able to live up to 'the criteria'...?

So, having said this...is it then really a good thing to have dreams and ambition, specifically if that includes the never full filling criteria of bigger and better the whole time...

I belief arrogance is a defence mechanism to assist the inner self to create rational for achievements that are not full filling for that individual....

Last but not least...One could argue saying a lack of ambition creates a lack of energy, but doesn't it at least bring more happiness and health...?

Putting Paid To A Few Misconceptions

Some people believe that nothing is impossible. While this is a good positive attitude, it is impossible for them to be correct because it will create another impossible situation. It will be impossible for something to be impossible.grin

Just like you cannot have a game without rules. Having no rules is a rule in itself.tongue

And sometimes when things go wrong, we tend to blame the wrong things for our woes.uh oh

We often hear students complaining about difficult exam questions, but when you analyze the problem properly, you will find that the questions are fairly familiar, and not difficult at all. It is the answers to those questions that create the problems.idea

It is the same with smoking. Humans don’t smoke. The cigarette smokes. Humans are merely the suckers at the other end.smoking

So, for the record, some things will always be impossible. Games will always have rules, exam questions are not difficult, and humans don’t smoke.giggle
