Funny...daydream I've been reading about that thought system in "A Course of Miracles". Highly advised reading. But, to each his own (path). (rose symbol of respect)

I wouldn't like to see it gone so much as transformed. Ego is the dynamic that creates. However, it's lack of discipline and self-aggrandizement leads to a lot of hurtful creation. I think that's why Gautama stressed forbearance so much. A disciplined ego can create so much of value in the world, but an undisciplined ego is wasteful, and often hurtful.

Hmmm...have to think about that one. Transformation would mean that there would be a shift in the thought system. In my perception of the "Ego" all connotations of it are destructive in some manner. In the very smallest way to the very largest 'idea' of Ego.

Self-Knowledge

And a man said, "Speak to us of Self-Knowledge."

And he answered, saying:

Your hearts know in silence the secrets of the days and the nights.

But your ears thirst for the sound of your heart's knowledge.

You would know in words that which you have always know in thought.

You would touch with your fingers the naked body of your dreams.

And it is well you should.

The hidden well-spring of your soul must needs rise and run murmuring to the sea;

And the treasure of your infinite depths would be revealed to your eyes.

But let there be no scales to weigh your unknown treasure;

And seek not the depths of your knowledge with staff or sounding line.

For self is a sea boundless and measureless.

Say not, "I have found the truth," but rather, "I have found a truth."

Say not, "I have found the path of the soul." Say rather, "I have met the soul walking upon my path."

For the soul walks upon all paths.

The soul walks not upon a line, neither does it grow like a reed.

The soul unfolds itself, like a lotus of countless petals.

NeWildflower: Do you think that we can learn everything then that there is to know, or that we need to know in a single lifetime?

I'm just so curious as to what people think, and I hope that nobody takes any of my questions to be provoking or in the wrong spirit.

I don't think that we ever can learn every thing that there is to know in our lifetime. Some things are meant to be mysteries and you are supposed to take them on faith.

If you are a non-believer, then what difference does it make. You will never know if you've learned everything or not.

..and I don't think that your question is provoking or given in the wrong spirit.

.
We can certainly learn everything that we need to know for in our life time otherwise we would not live for the entirety of our life time , as for being able to learn every thing , no we can not for a start not everything is know , and the amount of information is too vast , you could spend an entire lifetime studding beetles and still have more to learn on the subject
