But, SF, I think that if there are any changes made to make our schools, especially the older and more hazardous ones, safer for our children, it's a good thing.
I think they should go with a cooler color, like a beige as it deflects the solar rays. Green schools would only heat them up.
ttom500: But if the classroom is not improved with better teachers, better course material, better testing, and better student attitudes......you have not really improved the school.
Agreed. I really think how we educate the kids needs a critical change.
And how we educate them and who and what we educate them with.
That's far off in the future on the shores of a different world. The educational system right now needs a huge overhaul. It's complicated, what I'd suggest. But something along the lines of teaching kids more about themselves, others, the cosmos, and energy in all forms. So when they leave school, they are wise, harmonious, and have a solid understanding of the general nature of things and nature itself. Then again, the monetary system would have to go. The educational system basically teaches us to function and succeed in the current world which is apparently a vampire.
We tried corn based ethanol in the 70's and they generally all went bankrupt, so we tried them again in 2001 on and they are going broke again. So much for improved technology and more government funding. The only sure way of reducing energy needs and costs is to reduce consumption. Will the schools discontinue unecessary busing and driving by students, teachers and administrators to further reduce energy consumption? What is the energy cost of building solar panels as opposed to the energy saved? What is the amount of recyclable material in a solar panel as a percent of its material content? Any hazzardous waste in solar panels?

Sounds good in theory, as long as some nations aren't indoctrinating their children to hate Americans.

Nah, socialism is not the goal here. In fact, this type type of school would surely not be sponsored by any socialist government, or any government that we are aware of. It would more than likely be introduced and sponsored by some galactic government. Type 3 civilization:

I don't think nations would be that divided and that the world would be saturated with so much hate and fear in order for this type of educational teaching to take place. The illusion that we are not really different would surely be taught.

And I am to take your word for it,that Collectivism isn't the Goal of the whole Exercise?
NordicSkier: The only cost efficient non-fossil energy is nuclear (France gets 80% of its energy from nuclear energy. And no one dares criticize the French).
I certainly will dare to criticize the French.
Nuclear energy is neither "cost efficient" nor clean.
Energy is very high here.
Some people believe that France vitrifies all nuclear waste and stores it underground vaults. That was true 2O years ago when nukes produced only a fraction of the power in France.
But the new power plants, like those in the US, produce waste that cannot be vitrified. So, like in the US, waste is simply put into containers and stored above ground.
And since such waste will be radioactive for many centuries, its like a ticking time bomb waiting to create an inevitable ecological disaster.
Damn. I missed bidding on a local white schoolhouse. If only I'd known, I would've purchased it, painted it green, and got a ton of govt. money!
Oh, your faith in government intervention is touching, Tony. I recall a similar upsurge of faith during Lyndon Johnson's tenure - his Great Welfare dreams such as his urban renewel.
It was a great, revolutionary plan to rebuild our poor's world from the ground up under the tutelage of the USG. Unfortunately, his massive influx of money into destroying old buildings and constructing new dwellings for the poor culminated in something called "the projects." And we all saw how those turned out. The worst ghettos in American history were created.

now they want us all in one... change!!!1....yes we can!!!!
"WASHINGTON — The House is backing a multiyear construction plan designed to turn schools into more energy-efficient, healthier environments for the nation's schoolchildren. The legislation approves $6.4 billion in the first year, and similar amounts over the next five years, for green high-performing school facilities. Supporters said it would also create hundreds of thousands of jobs in the construction industry. The bill passed 275-155 and now must be considered by the Senate. The House passed similar legislation last year but the Senate did not take it up and President George W. Bush threatened to veto it. This year, President Barack Obama has included school construction as part of his economic recovery package and supporters are more optimistic that the green school initiative will advance." - Silicon Valley Mercury News
Is that a CAL hat your wearing. Are you a Berkley grad? The public schools in this country are the toilet. Look where we rank and you may be surprise and hopefully disappointed. The infastructure may be bad granted because of poor past management practices but not from lack of funding. The bigger problem in my view is what children are learning today in our public schools are also substandard compared to the rest of the worlds Major industrial countries. Dont you think we should be taking a graded approach on spending. Just throwing money at something is not a fix ... In many cases its a waste. We have green schools as we are turning our kids into vegatables that will not be able to compete in a global economy...

If you can keep a class of people dependent on you, you'll always get their vote.

If the other states are like Indiana, the schools are top heavy with administrative bureaucrats. There has been some "thinning of the herd".
JMO.
PS: private schools can educate a child for 1/2 the price...and do a better job. What's up w/that?

We live, we learn. Faith or no faith.
If you're not part of the solution...I think you know the rest.

Thanks for pointing that out RayfromUSA (I like how that rhymes).
Nuclear energy is outdated and primitive. It's dumb energy as you illustrated. Awesome post!

The government is going with privatization even with the Military because they are so wasteful and inept. That is why Halliburton got the big contracts and all the military bases in the US are run by Civilians now. Not civil service but private companies. The government is as broken as GM and Ford and AGI... They are also the biggest employer and I think are the only ones who have expanded in this economic crisis. Also remember our government had so called watchdogs that were suppose to keep and eye on these industries. Why have those dogs not lost any heads so to speak...
They talk about fiscal responsibility but have done nothing to encourage people to save and live within their means. We had a wake up call in the 70 but nothing changed. I dont see any real change here either. Only Big Spending...
