gut feelings are usually correct. yours is that they are not suitable to have the dog. If the dog is scared as well he may not be suitable for a young child anyway. I would say that you should keep the dog. Especially if you and the dog are forming a bond anyhow. The longer you have him, the harder for you to part with him as well. good Luck And it is true what ocee has said, the cheapest part of having a dog is buying it. Usually looking at least a hundred dollars per vet visit if they are sick, and usually more. I know as i have two of them. good luck
Ocee35: The words...After thinking it over, I realized the cheapest thing about having dog... is buying it, and that seems to be a stretch for you right now. I don't think you can afford the animal, but don't worry about him. We've grown fond of each other and I'll be keeping him.
We can count on Ocee to get it right...
Make sure you keep a self assured face, don't show any kind of regret about keeping the dog, or guilt about not giving it to them...the dog is yours. Period.
tracquers: Keep the poor little guy. I have 5 cats, all rescued from refuge or death row. They give me so much love. Lose the friends they are not worth it.
from what i can tell.... the people have there priorities messed up. how many tats will they get with the dog food money? and if you've had the dog 4 days already, unless they live 500 miles away, why didn't they pick him up already. i would have been there with you to pick up anything i really wanted. i suppose the untold part of the story my justify this but... keep the dog you know you want to ,or reveal the story for more accurate responses.

OneKitty: I know. That was also my thought. I was screened pretty hard by the H.A. They put me through my paces and I had to wait quite a while to get him. I am very much afraid to turn this animal over to these people. What do I say to them to say, "too bad, so sad" when I have already said "well, pay me when you can but the dog stays here until then." Is it bad to say, that I can't follow thru? It is tearing me up. Give me the words. Please.
The HA does screen pretty hard and if I'm not mistaken they sometimes do follow ups and if they find out that you got this little do for them...then they will confiscate the dog and neither of you will have them. Remember that whole Ellen controversy? So maybe you could let them know that you need to keep the dog because HA will be checking up on it to verify the terms of agreement?
OneKitty: I will probably leave parts of the story out, but I am very concerned. As many of you know, I rescured a dog from the pound the other day.
But I did it on behalf of another.
Now the whole thing has become a total mess.
I have fallen in love with this dog.
The people I had gotten the dog for....
Well, they cry "poor"
yet they both got tatoos today...
The dog acts like it had been abused and follows me everywhere. We are in bed now, and he crawled under the covers....so sweet.
I don't know what is right.
I know I left part of the story out, but I ....Well don't know what to do.
Do I follow the promise to the people....
or to the dog?.....(dog only weighs 5 lbs, people weigh more...)Ask questions, help me, advise. What would you do? Please be sincere. This has been ripping me up for 4 days.
Thanks friends,
K
Oregon has some very specific policies and procedures regarding rescue animals. What is your agreement with the shelter? That's what you need to look at first. The other side of the coin, of course, is a promise was made. Sticky, isn't it? Will talking with them help? How important is the friendship? Do YOU feel that a promise must be kept? Anyone else reading this--careful on making those promises. Choppy water, folks.
