rizlared: But those languages are not the first language of that state, that is American English, the same goes for the Amish regions, they speak a form of German/Dutch but English is still the primary language.

You are right, the first language IS American English, yes, of course it is. But one has to say that being able to travel 5 miles (or even less, in my recent experience) down the road and be surrounded by people speaking a totally different language is quite bizarre! Even the way the Amish do speak English is totally different to the way the American English speaking locals speak it..

petalbabe: Thats simply not true, is it, Riz??! How can you say that a video/picture of an interstate scene in New York State could be confused with a section of interstate in Arizona/New Mexico, etc?

As regards bougainvillea planted in Greece on the dual carriageways, well, surely that comes down to CLIMATE, not culture? If both Greece and the UK were governed by the same climate, and both countries drove on the same side of the road, I dont think you would see a great deal of difference in the actual scene, really..

To use your example, plants similar to bougainvillea probably grow on the roads in Southern California, to be sure. I cannot think that they would grow in the extreme North West of the US! Its only the same thing as your example of Greece and the UK.

I understand what you are saying, Riz, totally

I think it is just somewhat irritating to some Americans that Europeans (just using them as an example!) have a TENDENCY to group all US Citizens together. If that were true, I would say that the struggles in some states to retain their individuality would be non-existent.

Exactly, they are US citizens in the UNITED STATES not the UNION OF STATESthumbs up

And are you saying you never found a difference in the way people spoke between Dublin and Cork, be reasonable, if you go to Leicester you would be hard pushed to hear English spoken due to the large population of Asians. That has nothing to do with the actual difference between states. The point I am making is that which ever state you are in if you go to Wall Mart you will understand and be understood, hardly the same as being in Romania or Denmark

I repeat, I have travelled extensively in Canada and America, and can assure you that while there is a difference between states it does not come even close to the differences between European states, When you have lived there for a couple of years and toured around a bit, come back and then tell me, I guarantee you will come to agree with me.

To answer your specific question - people in Dublin and people in Cork speak the SAME LANGUAGE - albeit with a different accent. First point addressed..

Yes, I know what Leicester and Nottingham are like - I lived there for a time. The comparison can be made with that comment to going into Chinatown in any large US city, dont you think? In this day and age, any city, or even any town now, consists of diverse cultures and languages; I certainly found that in the part of Ireland I lived in. It was a struggle to find an Irish accent. So, again, although I understand what you are saying Riz, as regards your examples of Romania and Denmark, the point is that even throughout Europe, English may not be the first language, per se, but it is CERTAINLY the universal language of commerce.

I have in fact travelled myself quite extensively, but dont feel the need to explain myself here. Suffice to say, I understand your point completely, but stand firm on the fact that I know what I am talking about as well..

What has commerce to do with this??

You made the point that the states were as different as the countries in Europe, I beg to differ, I have given various examples each of which you have twisted back to your argument, so fine we will agree to disagree. I bow to your extensive and superior knowledge.

Ok first of all I made the statement. and I said absolutely nothing about the states as being as different as the countries of Europe.....I said perhaps it may help "IF" you were to look at the states as little countries "SIMILAR" to all the countries of Europe. I will not go into this further as you seem to enjoy this "OFF TOPIC" argument. You have made some outlandish claims towards America that are simply untrue. We are in fact one of the most diverse (if not the most) country of the world....we do have every culture, lag. and religion in the world ......now please tell me how many other countries can make this same claim. There are I am sure a few but now many at all.dunno

You know Jesse and Petal, confusions arise when pics are similar, I have had to look twice when reading both of your posts to ascertain which of you is writing them.

Firstly, I have TWISTED nothing. I have simply given my own point of view, in answer to your posts to me.

Secondly, if you read back through my replies to you, I have not resorted ONCE to sarcasm or any other type of attempted put-down; in fact I have said SEVERAL TIMES that I agreed in part with your views, Riz. I was enjoying our debate, and remained civil at all times in this thread.

dunno

However, if you wish to resort to sarcasm and one word replies, that of course is your preogative.

I cannot find one outlandish comment about America that was untrue, please show me, that your country is diverse is beyond a doubt, yes you have many types of culture and religions, so has the uk, a country less than the size of Texas, we have almost exactly the same immigrants and with them their cultures, religions and beliefs, one would expect a country the size of America to have exactly as you describe, that other countries also do the same is not so strange, but as was said many pages ago, America often tends to have blinkered views of those countries outside of North America.

I know Petal, but very often as is the case with couples, they post one after the other, paticularly of one is being maligned or having a hard time, as you two have done tonight on a couple of occasions. It is very easy to confuse who has said what.

I´m not supporting anybody by the way, just trying to highlight something.

No worries, Jan!

We have a problem, as my own laptop is defunct, so we are using the same PC. But please be assured, we both post our own views, and in our own words!

I wish you luck meeting the folks tomorrow..beer
