Jackson1862: It is my opinion that some athiests do not believe due to fear that they may be judged in the end and we will all be judged like it or not.

god sent his messengers to us to teach us and to guide us

Sindhi--I have always liked you so I hope you understand that my participation in this is just that--let me try and present a few ideas and ideals from the 'human experience', and not to sound patronizing, but there is much validity in the posts from others and you appear to be missing that. Please have an open mind, as you wish for others to have for you.---

who gets to decide which messengers from God are for real and which ones are not, Sindhi? Many fundamentalist preachers use the term "sheep", "flock", you know the drill. This is part of the effort to convince people that they need to be 'followers', 'listeners', obedient innocents who need shepherding. Many of us take this attitude with a very skeptical, dim view. Many of us celebrate the fact, that we, too, were created with brain cells, and that it is quite all right to use them! (what a novel idea!)
If we just followed what some grand poobah told us to do, in my mind we would be smirking right in God's face, not using the marvelous gifts he creates in each and every one of us. Do you remember the Jim Jones tradgedy in South America? Those members of that church fully respected and loved and followed their pastor, and the nut made them drink toxic Kool Aid! Do you get it now why some of us don't buy (a lot) of this rhetoric? Come on Sindhi, you're a smart guy. handshake

I would have to say that over the millenium, the most brilliant and wise believed in a Supreme Being.

Not too many outstanding intellects have not believed.

So, I have to say I disagree with Seneca's statement that belief in an Eternal Creator is "wrong for the wise."

I do not believe in immortality of the individual, and I consider ethics to be an exclusively human concern with no superhuman authority behind it.

religion is an expression of material realities and economic injustice. Thus, problems in religion are ultimately problems in society. Religion is not the disease, but merely a symptom. It is used by oppressors to make people feel better about the distress they experience due to being poor and exploited

Neither of these quotes directly present an atheistic viewpoint.

What you read /into/ a quote is something of your own construction.

Einstein is heavily quoted (and also, actually, has written often about) believing in a God- Just a /different/ concept of God than most would accept.

Your quote on Marxism is strictly about religion, not theism at all.

There is a vast difference between believing in a God and supporting religion.

"Religion and science are opposed . . . but only in the same sense as that in which my thumb and forefinger are opposed - and between the two, one can grasp everything."

Sir William Bragg

"Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between man and his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legislative powers of government reach actions only, and not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should "make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," thus building a wall of separation between Church and State."

Thomas Jefferson, letter to Connecticut Baptists

"It's hard to be religious when certain people are never incinerated by bolts of lightning."

This is an example of the God that people pray to and it disgusts me quite honestly......

""O Lord our Father, our young patriots, idols of our hearts, go forth to battle -- be Thou near them! With them -- in spirit -- we also go forth from the sweet peace of our beloved firesides to smite the foe.

O Lord our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells;

help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead;

help us to drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain;

help us to lay waste their humble homes with a hurricane of fire;

help us to wring the hearts of their unoffending widows with unavailing grief;

help us to turn them out roofless with little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames of summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it

-- for our sakes who adore Thee,

Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with their tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet!

We ask it, in the spirit of love,

of Him Who is the Source of Love,

and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts.

Amen. "

God is imaginary - its just as well really with all those political fingers in the pie

Karl Marx is not a person whose ideas are very impressive to me.... his ideas have proven to be a big failure when attempted.

Further, this thread is about the possibility of a Supreme Bing or creator, not religion.I was not and am not talking about religion ... just the possibility of an Infinite Omnipotent Creator.
