Home Owners Insurance is a requirement when you take out a mortgage. It insures that if your home burns to the ground(through no fault of your own)or another catastrophe happens, you have the means to rebuild. Renters Insurance is highly recommended by landlords because if the building suffers severe damage from roof collapses, etc., your belongings are not covered.
Life Insurance is not a requirement, but it is highly recommended to pay for your funeral and other outstanding debts you may have upon your demise. You certainly will not care about debts after you are dead, but when they advertise Life Insurance, they usually depict loved ones family members with their head in their hands wondering how to settle up, so to speak.

In the uk you will get your car impounded then crushed if you dont have insurance.

I agree that Obama's health care bill isn't great, and many of us are very disappointed that he caved-in to republicans with tossing out the "public-option" which would have given these insurance companies the "competition" they so badly need !
