I have a job offer in Madrid, the big capital city where I have a lot of friends and will earn a lot more money. however, I have many friends here who I will miss dearly, and it will be a lot more expensive to live in the big city.

Jan I would try the big city for a change and enjoy the city, museums, concerts, ....and the teaching and after that I would decide to stay there or come back to a smaller place.

You'll have to decide what you value most.
Whatever you do, decisions like that tend to affect the whole rest of your life. So make sure what you want.

I vote for Madrid.
But only because it's the only city in Spain I've spent much time in. I was there for a month and a half, and I really loved it. I spent an afternoon in Segovia, and that was cool too. And I know this has nothing to do with your personal situation, but....

friends will always get in touch. You're not going to lose them. The cmoforting thing about big cities is there's a nook for everyone. But are you ready for the big city rush?

That´s what I´m afraid of. I´ve been moving around the world quite contentedly for the past 10 years and finally decided to settle here in Murcia, Spain, albeit with a two year work contract in Russia inbetween. However, I do have itchy feet from time to time which was fine in the past, but I´m getting a bit too old to contemplate major moves now I think.

Madrid is far better than many others...if you have friends there, you could by word of mouth find a nice loft or something...do they have rent-control?? The cultural benefits would be much greater than where you are now. Poolside performances of the arts and letters can leave a lot to be desired.... Take a break and go for the urban drudge and chic; the glitter and the seamy and if you can swing it, escape on week-ends back to Murcia and go for a swim...or does Madrid have nice bath-houses..? (one last consideration: can you get home safely if you are drung, wild and silly or is Murcia better able to deal with you during any binges you go on...

Congratulations on being offered a new job Jan..
As for your decision, depends if you want a change or not, a new challenge and if the higher wage, combined with the higher costs, make the move & upheaval worth it or not.
Even then, if income will be roughly the same, it is still worth considering as you will meet more people and I'd expect more socialising opportunities.. Flights will be easier and cheaper to UK as well I think.
Good thing is you have friends there already who can advise on best places to find a new place and everything else, but as others has said, it is down to how you see the pros and cons from where you are just now.. Whatever you choose, am sure we will all support you..

Hi Yash.
And thank you. It is well worth considering, but I´m not sure about it. Flights are of course much easier from Madrid than here in the South East of Spain, but my friends here do not want me to move away, so I´m not really getting impartial advics. I´ve been here for 7 years and they have got to know me well, some much more than others, during that time, and I have a relatively good job.
It´s itchy feet, (not so itchy as in the past as I want to remain in Spain) more money, but a more expensive standard of living and the unknown of course.

I know how is to live in a big city, because I live in suburbs a big city in Australia. To live in a big city you can have advantages and disadvantages, the decision is yours and depends on what you want. Listen to both voices ,reason and heart
Just go for it, as you clearly need more money for a new keyboard!! Or can you get that from the office??
As for your friends, I was referring to the ones you know in Madrid, and I suppose another consideration is the contract and the company itself, as it seems the larger more international firms are more likely to have unexpected job losses, though you are probably fine working in a specialised field, and I think you have a pet also, (dog), but cannot remember 100%..
