The American dream is dead. It only lasted 10 years, through the 50's. Post war America became energetic and productive. The cost of living was in tune with earnings, the basics of life were within reach of most. Then came their involvement in Vietnam in the early 60's. Most Americans still don't know why 58 thousand young men had to die. It divided the country between those who bought the lie, that a 20th rate army, the Viet Cong, were somehow a danger to America, and those who saw clearly that it was a political ruse.

Now, at the same time as America re-invented Vietnam through Iraq and Afghanistan, Wall St., blessed their own with cons and scams to milk the American public dry. What is so scary, is that the Republicans and the Tea Party want more of the same. The U.S., owes China over a trillion dollars, basically China holds the mortgage on the U.S.A. A lot of that borrowed money was needed to fight two ridiculous wars which can't be won. Bin Laden is still alive, well and plotting.

Obama is doing his best, but it will take a miracle to save America from itself.

A country can only live off its history books for so long.

My my I'm not angry, maybe cause I am not all bent out of shape from the political stuff, I just vote the best one in I can and vote out the ones that were bad. No anger here, I just live life to my best ability. Anger comes from with in, no happiness there, letting out side forces hurt you inside. No way do I want to live that way..wine bouquet

The American dream continues to live on in some European minds regardless.

I see it in some of my students. The crisis has hit hard and some believe they can succeed in the US (though all say they want to return to Spain without exception) so they come to me, and other English teachers, to make their dream more possible.

I bite my tongue and teach English. laugh

I apologize to anyone under 35. My age group has mortgaged your future, you'll never pay it off.

Don't be so negative, Give them Hope or else why say anything. We must help be positive to others not negative, cause there is just too much negative these days, the young ones need Hope, Help and Promise of a happy life, without it, Life goes down no matter what. Give positve, Not sadness.moping

You remind me of a song.

It goes:

Dee, dee, dee, dee, dee, dee, dee.

Remember it?

If we knew then what we know now, I doubt there would have been a war in Viet Nam. We were idealists then, full of confidence and self assurance in our superiority to a bunch of little "gooks". Just because the French threw in the towel meant nothing to us, we were the biggest kid on the block and we decided to teach N. Viet Nam they couldn't just walk into S. Viet Nam and take it over. Only trouble was nobody asked the people of S.V.N. what THEY wanted. Instead we took the word of some corrupt power hungry politicians. Look what it got us.

As to the conduct of the war itself, we forgot how to fight the very tactical type of war that WE invented way back in the 18th century, namely how to win a geurilla war which is how we defeated the British for our independance.
The other thing which lead to our ignominious defeat in Viet Nam was the Viet Cong were following the teachings of Sun Tzu (google it) and we were following William Westmoreland who was still fighting WW2. The Viet Cong were the early Americans and we became King George III sniper targets. Proving the old addage about learning from history. As Don Mclean so aptly said "I guess they never will".
