They don't seem to be able to accomplish much of anything, maybe because the members are too busy taking bribes to concentrate on the real issues. But whatever the reason, human rights issues are never resolved by them. They can't sort out the Palestine/Israel conflict, they had no effect on Iraq except to implement the oil for palaces program. They're a large drain on the finances of a number of nations that get very questionable value out of the organization with the US paying 22% of their budget and that only due to a 22% ceiling currently imposed. The UK, Germany and France are next in line and also pay large amounts of the budget.
For what we get out of the UN is it worth the billions of dollars a year they suck out of our economies? Does the UN is impotent, corrupt and incompetent.... or is it? If it's not, why not and if it is, then why don't we disband it and put our resources to better use?

They are vehmently against Israel and I am very pro-Israel so they need to get their act together, but of course with the current status and past behaviour I don't think it will happen.
Yes, other than being a Jolly Boys' Outing, its pretty much ineffectual. If its going to cost so much (and it shouldn't!) at least have something that works...?!
But then, I think any politician's raison d'etre is to take the piss out of the electorate, n'est pas?
What makes ineffective the UN is the veto power of the 5 permanent members.- They are the Corrupt,Inefficient and Biased,as they veto resolutions according to their interest.-

Can you list a few of the examples of how the veto has made the UN overall an ineffective organization?

Possibly the biggest mistake that was ever made, it needs one of the major powers to leave to open the eyes of the world to this money wasting time wasting corrupt organisation. The USA has the most to gain. Get a strong leader and leave ASAP

The work of the WHO & UNICEF inter alia alone justify the existence of this body. It is much more than the Security Council. International co-operation has to be better than isolationist policies, for what horrors may have plagued the world in the last 60 years without it?

I agree they do have reason for existance. But they could use some restructuring. And we all would be better for that too. They actually have not lived up to what I have would of liked here of recent. We need to find a way to restructure and make them strong dependable and not wishy washy

10000% agree there Blue. They are not just there for, as you say, the Security Council.
I only read yesterday that they are fighting for a woman in Pakistan who has been sentenced to hanging for blasphemy..she's a christian..and has been in jail for 12 months already. They do many things of this nature and people can forget just what the UN really stands for.
Nov 13, 2010 8:39 AM CST Is it time to disband the UN?

Ideally replace it with something less corrupt and inefficient, but how you stop a body of that size from becoming corrupt and inefficient I have no idea.

Sadly as in big corporate world you have to take the bad with the good. There is no way to stop it from becoming corrupt. They might be able to shake it up for awhile ...but then the humaness will return. And as in society you learn to live with the good and the bad. But in my opinion it does not hurt once in awhile to shake a tree and let some of the nuts fall out.
Needs some serious pruning! It is way too intrusive in Countries domestic affairs! I do not remember voting for a Global Government, and that's what they aspire to become in a sort of Backdoor way!
I find it hilarious how Republicans justify the invasion of a soveriegn country because they failed to obey UN resolutions and with their next breath they want to disband the UN.
They have all the earmarks of a bipolar disorder. They are outraged by the national debt yet they want to give tax breaks to the rich. At the same time they want to eliminate the IRS.

If you find that hilarious maybe you would like to check into the other political parties. They are just as hilarious.
