But seriously, Vulcanic activity and plate techtonics (the movement of the plates of solid rock above the molten magma) are mechanisms and functions of the iron core which is responsible for protecting life on Earth from Solar radiation and particles. Without the roatating magnetic iron core we would have no protective magnetosphere. This magnetic "force field" protects us from the worst of the Sun's blast of charged particles and has allowed life to develope on Earth. Earth would be worse than Mars who's atmosphere has been blown away to a large extent by the Solar wind.
That may be little comfort to the many suffering people in Japan but without the tectoninc mechanisms that make up our planet there wouldnot be any Japanese or any people to populate this planet.

The Mayan Calender doesn't end in 2012 (or 2006) because the Mayans oredicted the World would end in that year ... the Calender ends because the guy carving it broke his chisel.

i was worried about the whole world ending thing...i was having a very logical conversation with a guy from uni and he believes that the world will end in 2012 however when the Mayans said the world was going to end they only knew about a certain small part of the world. so perhaps that part of the world will end and we will be fine. unless of course you live where ever they lived

I think the mayans got wiped out by other tribesmen who decided that cutting off mens penises with stingray barb to tell the future might not be the best type of leader to have, The mayans were a blood thirsty lot .
